Police Log: Citywide Thefts; Cars Stolen From Springtown

"Pay" option at area jail, heartbreaking petty crimes, and more from July 28 to Aug. 3.

Is this a concept Santa Rita Jail should consider? Charging for nicer cellblocks?

Those sentenced to jail time in Fremont for a misdemeanor typically bunk up in a tiny cell at the county jail. But now there's an alternative for those who can afford it: clean, modern accommodations in Fremont’s  “Pay-to-Stay” program

For $155 a day, plus a $45 one-time processing fee, those approved by a sentencing magistrate can serve their time in a “modern, clean and efficiently operated jail facility,” according to the Fremont Police Department.  More on that program here.

In other news, some thefts are downright heartless, such as the stone angel swiped from a Livermore memorial marking where a young skateboarder died last year.

A Newark theft in May also tugged at that community's heartstrings when a bright, whimsical pig-on-a-bike whirlygig was stolen from the yard of an autistic girl. The lawn ornament was a cherished gift from her grandfather.

Update in that case: Last week, a 23-year-old man was arrested in the theft, allegedly admitting his crime to police. Story here.
