Out of Order: Traffic Signal at Portola Avenue and Murrieta Boulevard

Traffic signal expected to be fixed Wednesday.

A traffic signal at the intersection of Portola Avenue and Murrieta Boulevard is expected to be fixed Wednesday, officials said.

The signal is undergoing an upgrade from signal to video detection. During the upgrade, city staff found the current controller cabinet in the signal is in poor condition. The city will replace it with a new one and the full upgrade is expected to be completed Wednesday, officials said.

As a result, the signal is operating under "flash" mode — red blinking lights. Remember, a blinking red signal calls for all motorists to stop at the intersection, proceed when safe and obey the right-of-way rules. The signal is expected to continue to be on flash mode during Wednesday's afternoon commute.

The signal was put into flash mode around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Drive safe!

Kris-what exactly is 'video detection' in regards to traffic signals?

Good question. I'm not sure and will follow up with city staff Wednesday. I got the information from an e-mail. I tried to dig some stuff up online and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_transportation_system — thought I'm not sure if that's the type of system the city is installing. But I think it provides some insight in terms of being able to have more control re: timing of the signals when battling traffic congestion and the like.

great thanks buddy...it'll be interesting to find out the true definition-I wonder if 'video detection' is another less intimidating phrase than 'red light runner camera' lol

Hey Kristofer - Did you make the Portola Academy Hearing at the Alameda County Board of Education? Livermore Patch was mentioned, believe it or not.

@Alan: I was not able to make it out. Was a decision made or was it just a public hearing?
