Mayoral Candidates Set

City council nomination period extended until Aug. 17.

Those are the official mayoral candidates Livermore voters can choose from in the upcoming election. The trio will vie for the mayor's seat this November to replace current Mayor Marshall Kamena, who terms out this year.

Hickman previously lost the mayoral race in 1999 to incumbent Cathie Brown.

Marchand currently serves as vice mayor. His latest term on the city council doesn't expire until 2013. Marchand was first elected to city council in 2005 after serving on the board for the Zone 7 Water Agency.

McKernan is a graduate of . She is currently a student at Dominican University in San Rafael, studying political science, according to her Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the nomination period for two open seats on the city council has been extended to 6 p.m. Wednesday because incumbent Jeff Williams did not file for re-election.

Williams won his seat in 2007 against incumbent Lorraine Dietrich.

The other open seat belongs to Councilwoman Marj Leider, who was first elected in 2003 and will be termed out this year.

Candidates who have qualified as of Friday are Bobby Burger, Stewart Gary and Laureen Turner.

Gary is a retired Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department chief. He currently serves as a trustee on the Board of Education.

Turner is a board member for the .

Kamena and Daniel Kozak have pulled papers for the city council election and have yet to turn them in, officials said.

The mayor's term in Livermore is two years and councilmembers' is four. Each candidate is elected at-large.

Candidate pamphlets with nomination papers and other election forms are available at the city clerk's office located inside . There is no fee to file a nomination but submitting an optional candidate statement runs $750.

The deadline to register to vote for this year's election is Oct. 24.
