Elderly Man Dead in Vasco Road Collision

Police are investigating a single-vehicle accident that temporarily shut down a portion of Vasco Road on Thursday evening.

are investigating the death of a 70-year-old Brentwood man on Thursday who crashed the SUV he was driving into a concrete abutment on North Vasco Road.

The single-vehicle accident was reported at 6:32 p.m. and temporarily closed down Vasco Road between Garaventa Ranch and Dalton roads. Vasco Road was reopened at 9:30 p.m.

The man, later identified as Arnold Rose, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said he had been traveling southbound on North Vasco Road when he veered right and struck a curb.

The Lexus then swerved to the left and over a raised center median, crossing the northbound lanes of traffic without hitting any other vehicles, according to a police report.

The vehicle came to rest after colliding with a concrete abutment.

Vasco Road, which has been the site of numerous fatal accidents
over the past decade, is a major commuter route between Brentwood and Oakley in Contra Costa County and Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore in Alameda County.

Between 1996 and 2008, 16 people were killed in crashes on Contra
Costa County's portion of the road. Most recently, , an Alameda County sheriff's deputy, was killed Dec. 30 in a crash on a stretch of the roadway just north of Livermore.

The investigation of Thursday night's crash is ongoing and anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Livermore Police Traffic Unit at 925-371-4850.
