Protect Yourself from Vehicle Burglaries

There's been a rash of vehicle burglaries in Livermore. If you stow your electronics in the trunk--thieves could be watching.

Seven people reported items snatched from their vehicles in Livermore in the past week, along with vehicle parts stolen. It takes less than a minute for a thief to smash your vehicle’s window, grab your stuff and move on.

Here’s a great tip to avoid being a victim—if you plan to hide something in your trunk, put it in there before you reach your destination. That way, if thieves are watching as you park your car, they won't see you hide your possessions.

More strategies to avoid being a victim:

Never leave valuables in plain view. Thieves know that you hide your property under towels, sweaters and packages. If you drive an SUV, consider installing a cargo cover.

Keep your vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up. Yes it’s a no-brainer, but a significant number of thefts occur from unlocked vehicles.

Report suspicious activity or people loitering. Police prefer to prevent crime rather than investigate it after it happens.

Park in a well-lit area. Thieves don't want any witnesses.

If you car is burglarized, report it to the police immediately.

Don't leave personal identification documents in your vehicle. These include Vehicle Ownership Title, credit cards, etc. Keep copies of license plate and vehicle identification number with you.

Keep serial numbers of electronics equipment, such as computers, tablets, and smart phones.
