The crash was reported at about 8:15 a.m. just west of the Airway Boulevard off-ramp, Officer Steve Creel said.

Initial reports indicated that a black Land Rover was traveling west on the highway at about 35 mph during the morning commute when the driver jerked the car left and it overturned, Creel said.

Two passengers were ejected from the SUV, and a third remained inside and crawled out, Creel said.

One of the two people ejected, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Creel said.

The other two victims, a man and a woman, were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley -- one by air, another by land -- to be treated for major injuries, he said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 8:35 a.m. when the CHP closed the westbound lanes. Some traffic was allowed to pass through on the right shoulder, Creel said.

The Sig-alert was lifted at 10:41 a.m. CHP is still investigating what caused the driver to veer suddenly.
