Early-Morning Garage Fire, Freeway Accident Keep Firefighters Busy

Pair of incidents kept firefighters on the move early Sunday.

A garage fire and a vehicle that veered off a roadway kept emergency crews busy early Sunday, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Battalion Chief Joe Testa said.

At 2:24 a.m. firefighters were sent to the 1100 block of Winged Foot Court, near Scenic Avenue and Vasco Road, for a possible garage fire.

Testa provides the following recap on the garage fire:

The first LPFD unit arrived on scene at 02:28 a.m. and found a fire contained to items kept in a garage that had been knocked down by the residential fire sprinkler system. Our crews confirmed that everyone had exited the house safely, and then performed a check for fire spread, and overhauled the fire. The fire did not spread into the building itself, though there was some smoke damage inside the house. Firefighters evacuated the smoke, removed the burned contents from the garage and secured the sprinkler system. The residents (two adults) were able to return to the house after our operations were complete.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the homeowners have a cat that they believed was okay, but hiding, Testa said.

Ten minutes after the garage fire incident was reported — while three fire crews were still assigned to Winged Foot Court — LPFD units responded to a vehicle off the roadway on westbound Interstate 580 at North Livermore Avenue, Testa said.

Testa said there were two occupants of the vehicle. An adult male was transported by ambulance to a hospital with apparent minor injuries, and another adult was taken into custody at the scene by the California Highway Patrol, he said.
