Charter School Put on Alert Following Report of Armed Person Wearing Clown Mask

Police clear area after finding kid playing with airsoft gun.

A report of a person wearing a clown mask and carrying a BB Gun put the Livermore Valley Charter School on alert Monday afternoon.

The following e-mail was sent to school parents:

The police were called today during middle school lunch recess.  At the end of lunch, students reported a neighbor came to his back porch wearing a clown mask and carrying a bb gun.  No words were exchanged and no one was hurt.

We held PE indoors and increased security during passing periods. Wall street pick up will be closed today.

When officers investigated the report they found a kid who was playing with an airsoft gun, Livermore Police Officer David Blake said.

Although the juvenile's actions were irresponsible, police determined there was no crime committed and released the kid, Blake said.

This happened in the middle of the school day why wasn't this kid in school? Also where were his parents if he was at home?

Wouldn't bullying or harassment be considered a crime? Aiming an airsoft gun at children on a playground should be a crime. It's not a BB gun... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsoft_gun

I dont see anywhere in the article that the person aimed the gun at anyone. It just stated he was carrying an airsoft gun.

Whether the gun was aimed at someone is irrevelant. Thank God for LPD and LVCS for taking this matter seriously. As a parent of a child there, I say thank you.

The airsoft gun wouldn't have scared me but I may have crapped myself at the sight of the clown mask.

Good point Danielle. its perfectly acceptable to wear a clown mask and walk with a gun that resembles a semi automatic...must be pointed...somewhere...up, down..it really does make a difference. Imagine how the school children and teachers must have felt seeing this threat. Sounds like they took it seriously, put the school on lockdown, called for police protection....because the gun was not aimed at the kids and not a threat? If the same kid walked into the bank, the ice cream shop or anywhere else would it really matter? Wearing the mask to hide his face obviously indicates he knew what he was doing was wrong.

email from school: "The police took swift action upon receiving our call. They arrived on the scene quickly. While interviewing our students, the police had multiple officers monitoring the residence. The officers then contacted the residents at the house, determined that the high school age student did not have intention to harm, but was playing an inappropriate prank on some students that were near the back fence. Replying to your reply - I have no issues whatsoever with the actions that were taken and totally approve of them. I just think that, to prevent rumors etc, when someone is commenting on an article, they should be commenting on what is written and not what they have read into it. As far as anyone knows, the kid was getting ready for Halloween (the mask) altho I totally hope he doesnt think it is acceptable to trick or treat with any type of weapon.

As someone who plays airsoft there really is no place for these anywhere but on an approved field. I would hope that any parents reading this with children who play make an effort to secure the weapons until it's time to go to a field. If they takes these out in public they could be expelled from school or worse killed by a policeman. They may have orange paint on the tips of the guns but police have to assume anything that looks real enough and pointed at them is deadly.

The City of Livermore just posted this press release on the incident: http://www.cityoflivermore.net/civicax/filebank/documents/8222/

I don't know what this kid was thinking, but as a parent I still can't believe that parents allow ANY type of gun, BB, airsoft, or otherwise to be 1 - kept unlocked, and 2 - used without supervision. No, it's not a shot gun or a hand gun, but it can still hurt someone or an animal. The mom in A Christmas Story wasn't kidding when she said you can put an eye out. Gun safety & common sense should always be #1. I am not anti-gun, we target shoot but the parents of this young person really need to take a step back and have a serious discussion.

It was aimed at the children.

Whether it was a costume or not it was wrong for him to do what he did

Wow, my son stupidly was going to sell his airsoft gun. He took it All apart and had it in a duffel till after school. He was suspended for 5 days. This kid must have been WHITE, to just be let go. LVPD at their best. That same kid will be the one carrying a real gun as soon as he can, why wasnt he in school?? Just saying
