UPDATE: Altamont Pass Road Reopened After Bicycle Fatality

The bicyclist was hit this morning around 11:10 a.m.

A bicyclist was hit by a van and killed just outside of Livermore this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The bicyclist was reported down in the roadway on Altamont Pass Road near Carroll Road at 11:10 a.m., CHP officials said.

The Alameda County coroner's bureau was called to the scene at about 11:30 a.m. The bicyclist, a man in his 40s or 50s, had apparently been riding up Carroll Road and failed to stop at the stop sign when it intersected with Altamont Pass, CHP Officer Steve Creel said.

He was hit by a full-size van when he turned onto Altamont Pass Road, Creel said.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The bicyclist's name has not yet been released.

Altamont Pass Road was temporarily closed in both directions starting at Greenville Road on the edge of Livermore, CHP officials said.
