Abandoned Ammunition Box Causes School Traffic to be Rerouted

By Autumn Johnson

Traffic near Christensen Middle School in Livermore was diverted this morning after someone abandoned a small green ammunition container near the road, Officer Traci Rebiejo said.

"The Livermore Police Department got a call around 7:15 a.m. about the container, which contained ammunition casings and military morters, at Broadmoor Street and Bridgeport Circle," she said. "We redirected school traffic, bicycles and pedestrians. We worked with the school to have a monitored alternate route to make sure the kids were safe getting to school."

According to Rebiejo, the Alameda County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called to collect the ammunition box. Rebiejo added that it was unknown who left the ammunition box.

Christensen Middle School issued this statement to parents following the incident:

This morning at approximately 8:00 am, Christensen Middle School was notified by the Livermore Police Department that traffic was going to be diverted, as a precaution, near Broadmoor Street and Bridgeport Circle. There were ammunition casings and military mortar items found on the sidewalk. The Livermore Police Department and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District worked closely together to ensure the safety of the students walking or riding bicycles to school. Christensen Middle School was never in any danger. The students are safe and the students who arrived late were excused for being tardy.
