New Livermore Chamber Panel Targets Education

Chamber plans partnerships with area schools and businesses.

Economists, scholars and educators agree that to maintain an economy driven by innovation and ingenuity, it is essential that students are high-tech career ready. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is becoming more important to engage in today’s knowledge-based economy.

The fastest growing and highest wage jobs will be in the STEM field. Projections for the top four jobs with the biggest workforce increase in California between now and 2018 are STEM-related careers:

  • Biomedical engineers - 81 percent growth projections
  • Network systems and data communications analysts - 50 percent growth projections
  • Biochemists and biophysicists - 48 percent growth projections
  • Medical scientists, except epidemiologists - 47 percent growth projections

Both the nation and California are lagging far behind other nations in creating an educated workforce.

“Tri-Valley companies are telling us that they have many job openings that they cannot fill even during a recession," said , president and CEO of the . "These jobs tend to be engineers or other tech jobs.”

Livermore Chamber of Commerce Education Committee

The Livermore Chamber of Commerce, with leadership from Christine Wente, has formed an Education Committee. At the event in February, Wente stated that education is something she has a real passion for, and was excited to be heading up the committee.

At its first meeting recently, the group started to lay out plans for putting together partnerships with local businesses and a communication plan for what is working right with local schools and .

Some of the topics discussed included how they can:

  • Highlight general student achievements, including statistics
  • Highlight specific student achievements
  • Focus on STEM education
  • Highlight specific areas that need help, provide opportunities through Livermore Valley Education Foundation (LVEF) or other organizations

is surveying businesses to see what their job needs are. The Education Committee hopes to share those results.

The Education Committee will meet monthly, and updates will be posted on Livermore Patch.
