Great Escape: Get Away to Cazadero, in Wine Country

Plan a getaway to Sonoma County. Take a stroll among the redwoods, enjoy coffee and a scone, and visit a saw mill and winery.

As the weather improves, a Russian River Getaway to Cazadero, about 100 miles away, is the perfect place to enjoy the wine country close to the Pacific Ocean.

A forested area in Sonoma County, Cazadero overnight offerings include a quaint stay in pet-friendly, vacation-rental cabins nestled among groves of tall redwoods.

The Lemon Drop is a snug one-bedroom cabin with a kitchen, living room and wrap around deck and yard, with outdoor dining and sauna for $150 per night through March 31.

Or you can enjoy a stay in the two-bedroom Heronwood for $175 through March 31. A March special includes a free night with any two- or three-night booking at several rental cabins in the area.  Call 855-433-6673 for more information.

There's also a cottage on the grounds of the award-winning Raymond's Bakery, close to downtown Cazadero at 5400 Cazadero Highway. The bakery has coffee, artisan breads, cakes, scones and cookies. Open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the bakery has wine, beer and Pizza Night on Fridays, when the shop stays open until 9 p.m. Call Raymond's at 707-632-5335.

Berry's Saw Mill, just past Cazadero Highway along Highway 116, invites the public to a free, self-guided tour to learn how giant redwood trees are milled into lumber. 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Call ahead, 707-865-2365.

Stop by the Wild Hog Vineyard and winery in the hills between Cazadero and Fort Ross and at the headwaters of the Wild Hog Creek (thus, the winery's name).  Call the vineyard at 707-847-3687 or e-mail winery owners Daniel or Marion Schoenfeld at info@wildhogvineyard.com about their pinot noir, zinfandel, and cabernet sauvignon.
