Attackers Hurl Concrete Chunks From Railroad Crossing at Police Officer

A Livermore Police Officer was struck in the head and injured after several people threw rocks and chunks of concrete at him early Friday.

are searching for a group of attackers that injured an officer early Friday by hurling chunks of concrete and rocks at him from a railroad overcrossing.

The officer, whose identity is not being released, was taken to Valley Care Hospital for medical treatment and was released this morning, Officer Steve Goard said.

The attack happened shortly after about 2:28 a.m., when the officer noticed debris in the roadway underneath the P Street railroad crossing, officials said.

The debris consisted of large chunks of concrete that could be hazardous to oncoming traffic. The officer activated his emergency lights to notify cars while he cleared the roadway hazard, according to a press release. 

The officer then notified police dispatch he was going to clear the debris from the roadway. Moments later, the officer requested emergency assistance as he was having rocks and chunks of concrete thrown at him from the overcrossing.

The officer reported three to four people threw several rocks at him and then fled westbound on the railroad tracks from P Street.

The officer has been placed on medical leave due to his injuries.

Based on the investigation thus far, it appears that the subjects planned the attack and intended to hurt the officer. The chunks of concrete used during the assault were approximately 8” x 14” in size. The rocks used during the attack were the granite rocks that line the railroad tracks and are roughly 3 inches in diameter. 

Livermore Police Department is investigating the incident and is asking for the community's help in identifying the suspects in this case. Anyone with information is urged to contact Livermore Police Officer Steve Goard at 925-294-7531. Those who wish to remain anonymous may do so.
