Officers continued to attempt contact with the subject by all available means with no response.  The investigation has revealed the subject was making suicidal threats with a knife, but had not committed any crimes. In the interest of not causing an unnecessary confrontation with the subject, who was possibly attempting to commit “suicide by cop”, and since there was no legal justification to force entry into his apartment, all marked police units departed the area however; undercover officers remained on scene and conducted surveillance of the subject’s apartment until after midnight. The subject was not contacted and no further information was received.  This case is still under investigation.

One resident of the apartment complex was transported away from the scene by ambulance for medical reasons unrelated to this incident.

Here's our report published Thursday:

Police on Thursday cleared the La Vina Apartments complex off East Avenue after investigating a suicide threat, official said.

At 3:38 p.m., officers responded to the 4600 block of Gerrilyn Way for a "suspicious occurence," according to police.

A police press release states:

Upon arrival, officers established contact with the reporting party who told them the subject threatened to harm himself, as well as making threats toward responding officers.

Officers then established a perimeter around the apartment and attempted contact with the subject, who refused to communicate with them.

At around 4:25 p.m. officers began to use a PA system and demand the man to come out and surrender to police. Nearby apartment residents were ordered to shelter in place, according to reports heard on a police scanner.

Police decided to terminate the investigation at about 5:45 p.m. and cleared the area.

It does not appear any crimes were committed and the condition of the man is unknown at this time.
