Here's information provided by the Livermore Police Department. Photos courtesy of Alex Dourov. Did you know that traffic collisions are the leading cause of death among teenage youth? In fact, every 15 minutes, someone in the United States is severely injured or killed in an alcohol-related incident. On May 22nd and 23rd the “Every 15 Minutes” program will be presented to all of Livermore’s 11th- and 12th-grade students. More than 2,000 students will be directly affected by this “anti impaired-driving” presentation. Livermore’s “Every 15 Minutes” program is the largest in the nation.

Sunset's Extended Student Services Program Gets a Boost

Park district trustees approve adding full-time teacher to before- and after-school program.

Here's information provided by the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District: At a regular meeting Wednesday night, the Board of Directors for the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District approved adding a full-time teacher to the Extended Student Services program. The new teacher would be added to the Sunset Elementary School ESS program, which currently has a waitlist of more than 70 students needing before/after-school child care for the 2012-2013 school year. There are already 115 children enrolled, which is the maximum that can be served with the current space and staffing. Adding a full-time ESS teacher to assist in day-to-day operations, in addition to required part-time staff, will allow LARPD to increase program size from 115…

School District Announces New Administrators

Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District appoint five new principals and a new director of curriculum and special projects.

Here's an announcement from the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District is very pleased to announce the appointments of a new Director of Curriculum and Special Projects, effective June 11, 2012, and five new principals, all of whom begin their official duties July 1, 2012. Alberto Solorzano will take the helm at Livermore High School and Gregg Elliott and Laura Lembo will preside over Junction Avenue K-8 School and Joe Michell K-8 School, respectively. Patricia Avilla and Joshua Swerdlow, currently vice principals in the district, have been promoted to principal positions. Granada High Student to Perform National Anthem at Oakland A's Game

Granada High's Braden Sweeney will perform Sunday in Oakland.

Braden Sweeney, a Granada High student, has been chosen by the Oakland Athletics to perform the national anthem at Sunday's baseball game, according to a report by the Bay Area News Group. Further details from the feature on Sweeney by BANG Reporter Robert Jordan here: Sweeney was selected by the A's organization to sing the national anthem at the game after a CD of his rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" was sent to the team last year. 13-Year-Old Dublin Boy Struck by a Car Expected to Recover

Boy’s mother hoping for him to return to school after spring break.

Editor's Note: Updated as of 3:52 p.m. A 13-year-old Dublin boy who was hit by a car while in crosswalk Wednesday afternoon at Amador Valley Boulevard near Wildwood Drive is expected to recover,  according to Lt. Steve Brown of Dublin Police. Brown says the boy, a student at Wells Middle School, has a broken femur. The accident happened around 4:20 p.m., and the boy was taken by Life Flight to Children's Hospital in Oakland. Ann Gursky, the principal’s secretary at Wells Middle School, said the student is “doing well.” “The kids are all making cards for him and his mom told us she hopes he will be back after spring break,” said Gursky. “He is a wonderful kid. It's kind of hard to "miss" a 13 yr old boy crossing the street, unless you are not looking where you are supposed to be looking. Don’t Count your Chicks Before They Hatch

Something “egg-traordinary” is causing quite a stir at Lydiksen Elementary

Walk into most third grade classrooms and you may hear the sounds of children, the voice of the teacher or announcements over the intercom. What you probably would not expect to hear is the sound of newly hatched chicks. Throughout the halls of Lydiksen Elementary in Pleasanton this week, you cannot help but hear the “cheep-cheep” echoing from the classrooms. The third grade classes have been learning about eggs and chicks for weeks. Jennifer Guerin, a third grade teacher at Lydiksen, says the classes start the annual chick-raising process by learning about the parts of the egg. “They crack open store-bought eggs to see what is inside,” she said. “Next, students had to correctly identify the parts and label a diagram.
