Obituary: Merilyn “Tilli” Holm Calhoun

An obituary and a collection of pictures provided by Tilli's family.

Merilyn “Tilli” Holm Calhoun Merilyn “Tilli” Holm Calhoun unexpectedly lost her three-year battle with melanoma on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, 2012. She spent the day at home surrounded by family and thoroughly enjoyed a piece of chocolate Kahlua pie from the Restaurant at Wente Vineyards. Tilli was a descendent of two pioneer families, the Teeters and the Holms, that settled in Livermore in the late 1800s. She was born along with her twin brother Frank on April 1, 1929 to Dick and Ione Holm. One of her favorite stories to share was of her father, who was known as a prankster, trying to convince his friends on April Fool’s Day that he was the new father of twins. She grew up picking almonds, pulling mustard weeds, and hunting for chicken…

I am 36 years old and I fondly remember Mrs. Calhoun from Marylin Avenue, when she worked in the library. She was the one who got me started into reading. I remember one year that there was a reading contest or something that you could do over the summer and if you read so many books, you would win a prize. I did a lot of reading that summer and I won the book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel …   more ›

Communities To Paint Towns Blue In Honor Of Young Girl

Livermore and Newark residents plan to remember Madi Seeds, a 12-year-old who died of congenital heart disease.

Sami and Madi Seeds were like any other pair of sisters. They shared secrets, occasionally fought, did each other’s hair and laughed. “She had the goofiest laugh,” Sami said. But for an entire year, 15-year-old Sami has been forced to only remember her sister’s laugh in her memories. Madi Seeds passed away on Feb. 17, 2011 at the age of 12 of Tetralogy of Fallot and Degores Syndrome, a congenital heart disease she was born with. She was a seventh grader at Christensen Middle School. To remember her and celebrate her life on Friday, her family and friends are inviting communities everywhere to wear Madi’s favorite color: Blue. Heading the effort to memorialize Madi in her hometown of Livermore is Sami and her mother, Beckie Seeds. Sami …

Shine On, Alliy Bayliss

Thousands attended the memorial celebrating the life of 15-year old Alliy Bayliss at Community Presbyterian Church in Danville on Monday.

Our hearts have been filled with overwhelming sadness and compassion for the family of 15-year-old Alliy Bayliss since Wednesday when police announced the search for her had ended. With every blue ribbon we pass, tied around hundreds of posts throughout many neighborhoods in Danville, our tears of grief remind us of how blue we feel.  Blue, azul, the color of the sea and sky, was Alliy's favorite color and the predominant color used in most of her artwork. The work was on display in the halls of Community Presbyterian Church, where thousands streamed into the service organized by the Bayliss family, with an outpouring of help from friends and the community. As if the sea and sky met without borders, so did the horizon of the more than 2,…
