Everyday at the corner of Stoneridge and Stoneridge Mall Road there's a family, even with a baby inRead More a stroller, begging for money. Usually it's during the day, so I'm not sure if the kids are even in school, maybe they are homeschooled. But what is to note is that the people in this family have brand new shoes, brand new clothing. I'm not one to judge, I'm not supposed to judge, but it's frustrating to try to do the right thing by giving to people really in need. It's why I help organizations that help people, instead of giving money directly. By giving it directly, they actually don't need to work and get it all tax free. You and I, the working people have to pay taxes on income. I always see the guy asking for a bus ride to Seattle too around LIvermore. We joked one time that he still hadn't caught that bus (it was two years ago when we gave him money). Someone once did a study, I'll have to find it, about panhandlers in San Francisco, and how they actually make more money on the street than working a job at minimum wage. There are those that are truly homeless, and my heart goes out to them. But these families begging for money, it's a new low.
john m April 18, 2014 at 06:36 pm
Yes i also saw a study and the panhandler at the top of the stairs at the SF Bart station made overRead More $60k a year tax free ......with the little cup.
Jennifer Clouser April 18, 2014 at 11:27 pm
Yes there is a homeless issue in Livermore and yes most of them are scamming to get $$$. It is hardRead More to see someone homeless or not but using thier children as a wild card to get sympathy from others, because it just really pisses me off!!! I agree on not giving $$$!!! When I lived in SF and people woul ask for $$$, I would say no..., but I'll buy you some food... Some would balk at the offer and some would be so greatful! I do the same out here and 90% don't want it, they want the $$$. I'll feed you, but I won't support your addiction! I have also seen some panhandlers at the end get into better cars than I have! I go to Oakland twice a week an where I go there are 3 people I see with signs yadadayada then I see them meet up with someone and hand over their $$$, like Pimpin out the homeless card. I don't even offer food because they have rows of food that was given to them, just withering in the hot sun... It saddens me!!! It truly is a COLD HUSSLE, but don't let the hustlers harden your heart so that you turn your head EVERY TIME you see a panhandler!

Why not do a fundraiser that promotes gardens that utilize water conservation techniques and design.Read More Rather than just featuring ornate gardens, feature homes with designs and plant selections that use less water, or utilize greywater systems for watering.

I saw the eclipse begin, at 11 pm through (very) thin clouds. I came back outside and watched it toRead More totality at just past midnight, with clouds getting heavier (so sometimes it was nearly blurred out, sometimes it was almost clear - I could see Spica nearby and Mars a little further away). And then I went to bed - didn't try to watch it come out.
Maureen Haesloop April 15, 2014 at 12:45 pm
I was bummed out. I could barely see the moon through the light fog, as the earth started to blockRead More the moon, but when it was a total eclipse, and because of I guess the blood shade of red, it became completely viewless. Boo Hoo. The night before would have absolutely been the perfect night.

It says Around Town but the headline is UTAH. Utah is not near Natick!! I think everyone should notRead More open an article on Patch unless they see their town's name in the headline. So If it doesn't say Natick, then we all know it is not LOCAL to the Natick Patch. The less clicks these Patch sites get, the fewer advertisers they will get and then perhaps they will realize if we want sensational news from across the country we'd go back to Patch's former owners AOL and the HuffPost! Those here from other Patch sites - I think you should do the same only click on articles that mention your community's name. No name. No click!

It cleared up nicely for the eclipse, as viewed from the upper deck of Berkeley Yacht Club. TheRead More theme of this year's eclipse class was 15th Century Chinese Survey Techniques. By observing the same eclipse at widely separated locations, and then measuring the time difference to meridian transit of a known star or planet (using a water clock), ancient map-makers could establish longitude with surprising accuracy. Last night us amateurs came within 23 seconds of getting the time of the start of totality correct (after averaging all the guesses), which is only a 4.5 mile error in longitude. We'll do this again in October.

After the 89 quake we learned a lot, like DO NOT turn off your gas main, could be months before itRead More is restored. Gas smalls like onions or another foul stench, yet- the aroma doesn't akways mean a gas main is broken. Keep aplastic garbage can in the garage, put your batteries, fl;ashlights, can goods, can opener, tp, wet ones, first aid, kids comfort items (blankies, teddies) in there too, makes kids feel safe to know they have those things. Water and water, candy bars, energy bars, some clothing, windbreakers, etc. change that water out, doesn't last forever. Maybe even your camp gear- after 89 we didn't want to go back inside, too many aftershocks. My fireplace poker flew across the room like supernatural forces! Have a plan for your kids- a pick up tree of sorts, so the kids know they will be fetched eventually in the case of a major quake. You can be stuck in an elevator for 12 hours- you can be stranded at work-make a family plan and you will feel less anxiety.

If you work in "the city" keep a pair of sturdy boots at work. In 1989, several people iRead More know found themselves having to navigate their way home through broken glass and "rubble", such as concrete and stone that had fallen from the facings of buildings.

Can I ask whose brilliant idea it was to give the fun k children runners a wine glass? Think aboutRead More it - not only a glass for alcohol but a GLASS! Heard breaking glass all over. Any rationale why the spike in prices? Gas in Danville is over $4/gallon.

Its just that time of year when the refineries do mandatory maintenance and that takes supply out ofRead More the market. This always makes gas jump up weather its justified or not. Counter the jump by having OIH in your portfolio.

Dublin is having great fun with there name on St Patricks Day. The name Dublin has nothing to doRead More with Ireland. It is from there old name "Doubling Station" it was a stage coach stop where they doubled the horses to pull the Altomont Pass, thus "Doubling Station", which later was shortened to Dublin, doubling sounds almost the same.

They are right that statistics don't tell the whole story. Using the average is very deceptive.Read More they should give the average with one standard deviation or use the median rainfall as the standard. An average does not show that trhere are historically large swings in rainfall in California.

If water is dangerously low, why do cities, especially Zone 7 purge the system for three weeks. WhenRead More we called them, they said it was going into a filtration system. Unless they installed this make believe filtration system in the sewer system, which is where the water from the tanks on Duke Way went, it went right down the drain. Three full weeks running day and night.
