Local Students Help Foster Kids and Puppies

A program that enriches the lives of students, plus it takes waste out of the environment, plus it helps disadvantaged kids and a program to help the disabled. What a deal!

Most of us would look at a used mylar drink pouch or food bag and think—trash! But students in the Mylar Sewing Enrichment Class at Joe Michell School see sewing materials. They transform those clean pouches into dog leashes, tote bags and zipper pencil pouches.

Now they’ve turned their sewing skills into a project to help disadvantaged kids and a program that assists the disabled.

The students have filled 100 zipper pencil pouches with school supplies. Next week they’ll donate those filled pouches to the Sleep Train Foster Children campaign so children will have fresh school supplies to start school in the fall.

In addition, they will donate dog leashes to Tri-Valley Guide Dogs Puppy Raisers.

The sewing program got underway last fall when the Altamont Education Foundation gave 2 grants of nearly $6,000 to Joe Michell’s afterschool enrichment program. They money was used to purchase 6 sewing machines.

Representatives from Sleep Train and Tri-Valley Guide Dogs will accept the donations on June 5.
