Las Positas College to Present 'Operation Gateway' Seminar for Returning Veterans

The free event is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18.

The Las Positas College Veterans First Program will present its sixth annual "Operation Gateway - A Veteran's Transition to Success." 

The two-day event will be on Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18. Operation Gateway is a two-day orientation seminar about educational opportunities and resources for returning veterans, from 3-7:00 p.m. on July 17 and continued on July 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the Las Positas College campus. Dinner will be served to veteran guests on July 17; lunch will be provided on July 18.

"We are proud to offer this two-day seminar that will be dedicated to in-depth education and career planning, classroom expectations, finance and benefits information, campus life, community resources and veteran support services," said Veterans First Coordinator Todd Steffan. "Operation Gateway" is also a great opportunity for veterans to experience firsthand the community and camaraderie at Las Positas College."

In addition to informational sessions and workshops, veterans will meet other veterans and enjoy two delicious meals with students, staff, and members from community organizations. 

Textbook stipends also will be available for eligible student veterans. There is no charge for veterans to attend the seminar but visitors are reminded that the campus has a $2 parking fee. Daily tickets are available from vending machines in the campus parking lots. Space is limited; early registration is recommended. "Operation Gateway" is sponsored by the Las Positas College Veterans First Program that provides veterans with services and resources to help them achieve their educational goals. This past academic year, more than 400 veterans or active duty military personnel were enrolled at the College.

Veteran support services include a full-time program coordinator, Veterans Resource Center, priority registration, transfer workshops, Textbook stipends for eligible students, a book loan program, a study/drop-in tutorial center, work-study program and an active Student Veterans Organization. Las Positas College currently enrolls approximately 9,000 students and offers curriculum for students seeking transfer to a four-year college or university, career preparation, or basic skills education.
