Community Invited to Celebrate Livermorium Day at Events in Livermore & Online

On May 30th, the City of Livermore, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District will be hosting a day of events - both online and downtown- to celebrate the first anniversary of Livermorium Day.

Mayor John Marchand proclaimed May 30th Livermorium Day to recognize the discovery of chemical element 116 on the periodic table, which was named in honor of the City and the researchers who discovered it. Livermore is one of only six cities around the world for which an element has been named.

An interactive Google Hangout will be held from 9:30am-10:30am with Mayor Marchand, LLNL scientists, members of the community, and students from Granada High School and Christensen Middle School. The public can also watch "Livermorium Day: Celebrating Scientific Discovery" live on Google+ and contribute to the conversation on Twitter by using the #Livermorium hashtag.

The Livermore Civic Center Library will be projecting the Google Hangout conversation in the Library's Community Room, preceded by a brief introduction to Twitter at 9:00am. Community members interested in participating in the Twitter tutorial at the Library should bring a laptop or mobile device capable of connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi and arrive no later than 9:00am. In the evening from 4:00pm-5pm, community members are invited to a celebration in Livermorium Plaza at Mills Square Park. Following Mayor John Marchand's opening remarks, the event will proceed with guest speakers and the unveiling of three Livermorium conceptual works of art. Awards will be presented to the winners of the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair.
