Where to Find Cheap Gas

According to the American Automobile Association, the gas prices consumers are paying today haven't been seen since 2008.

Looking for relatively cheaper gasoline prices?

You can find them if you don't mind driving to another part of town or perhaps to a neighboring city.

A Patch survey of a dozen communities in southern Alameda and central Contra Costa counties shows the price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline ranges from $3.83 in Castro Valley to $4.09 in Livermore.

The prices were studied on gasbuddy.com and gasprices.mapquest.com.

A report this week by the California State Automobile Association indicated the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded nationwide was $3.52, up 40 cents from a month ago.

In California, the average price is $3.91, a 50 cent hike in the past month. In the Bay Area, the average price has jumped to $3.96, an increase of 48 cents from last month.

Gas prices in the East Bay vary from town to town and even within a community. Items such as proximity to a freeway or if other gas stations are nearby seem to be factors.

In Castro Valley, the range of prices went from $3.83 to $4.05. There were 10 stations listed on gasprices.mapquest.com that were selling regular unleaded for under $4 a gallon. The cheapest prices were at two Quik Stop markets, one of them on Castro Valley Boulevard.

In Union City and Newark, the range was $3.89 to $4.05 a gallon. A 7-11 store on Decoto Road was listed at $3.89.  An A&S Enterprise station on Thornton Avenue was selling for $3.92 while a Chevron on Newark Boulevard near Highway 84 had a listed price of $4.05.

Livermore had some of the highest prices on the other side of the hills. The range there was $3.86 to $4.09.  A Chevron station near Interstate 580 had the highest price.

In Dublin, the range was $3.88 to $4.05. The highest price was recorded at two stations near the intersection of San Ramon Road and Dublin Boulevard.

In Danville, almost every station was listed at $3.99 a gallon.

In Walnut Creek, the range was $3.91 to $4.05 a gallon. The cheapest listed was the Chevron station at Ygnacio Valley Road and North Main Street.

If you don't mind driving, the maps showed gasoline for as low as $3.76 a gallon in Antioch, San Bruno and Modesto.
