Swalwell Named As Assistant Democratic Whip

Democratic leader selects new congressman for influential post

Less than a week after being sworn into office, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) has been named to a key Democratic post.

On Monday, Democratic House Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) named Swalwell as an assistant whip.

Whips are part of the Democratic caucus. They inform other Democratic House members of impending legislation and help line up votes.

“Rep. Swalwell, as a new member of Congress, will bring a fresh perspective to the whip team," said Hoyer. "I look forward to working with him to advance the priorities of the American people, including efforts to promote job creation and strengthen the middle class.”

“I thank Whip Hoyer for entrusting me with the honor of serving as an assistant whip for the 113th Congress.” said Swalwell.  “I look forward to working with the House Democratic leadership and all of my colleagues to advance common sense solutions to our nation’s problems.  I believe my youthful energy and new ideas will help our party and our country move forward in the 113th Congress.”

Swalwell was sworn in on Thursday. In November, he defeated 40-year House incumbent Pete Stark to win the newly aligned 15th congressional district seat.

What do you think? Is Swalwell too new to the House to chosen for such a post?

Nick, I was referring to this quote: "I believe my youthful energy and new ideas will help our party and our country move forward in the 113th Congress.” It may be semantics, but when I see party before country in a sentence, that doesn't make me feel comfortable about any one, democrat or republican.

Eric - Congratulations on your assignment. You won this election to represent all constituents in the New CA 15th CD. I for one know you have what it takes to best do that even though there's no way you'll make everyone happy! Make us proud Eric!

Congrats. I'm Libertarian and proud to say I voted for Eric (too bad my party didn't have its own candidate though). New blood helps put dinosaurs out to pasture.

Guy Houston will be remembered when it comes to Eric's performance. Guy Houston campaigned for Eric. I voted for Eric and was hopeful of something more than hoping on tired old political agendas like the AWB.
