Livermore's Largest Employer Shedding Hundreds of Jobs

Lawrence Livermore Lab is downsizing.

Written by Beatrice Karnes

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
is cutting hundreds of workers through voluntary separation, according to Director Parney Albright.

The program was announced earlier this month and workers were given just two weeks to jump on board.

The Self-Select Voluntary Separation Program (SSVSP) is available to all career employees. Those who choose to leave the Lab will receive one week of pay for every year of continuous service, up to 26 weeks.

The Lab expects a significant budget cut in fiscal year 2014, which starts Oct. 1.

"Although there remain a number of unknowns about how the budget request for FY14 would flow down to our Laboratory, it is clear the budget proposal will face an uphill battle in Congress this summer, with continuing debates about reducing federal spending, a possible FY14 sequester and the debt ceiling," Albright explained.

"It is our hope that implementing the SSVSP now, rather than waiting for additional details on the FY14 budget, will put the Laboratory in a better posture to address whatever budget realities we'll face in FY14 and beyond."

All employees who opt-in to the separation program are expected to be gone by June 13.

According to the Livermore Chamber of Commerce, Lawrence Livermore Lab has 8,750 employees making it, by far, the largest local employer.
