Livermore Sanitation Rates May Increase

City Council to hold public hearing on proposed rate increases for Livermore Sanitation.

Heads up. Trash pickup soon may cost you more.

The City Council on Monday will hold a public hearing Monday on increasing  rates to help offset budget shortfalls the waste management company has experienced the past two years.

Livermore Sanitation is proposing a 19 percent fee increase for 20- and 32-gallon container residential customers and a 14 percent increase for all other customers, according to city staff reports.

If the council approves the proposed rates, Livermore residents would pay $13.76 for a 20-gallon container and $22.96 for a 30- to 36-gallon container.

If approved, the new rates would take effect July 1.

Monday's council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the , 3575 Pacific Ave.

Not having been at the city council meeting, I hope someone on the council asked Livermore Sanitation why the shortfall exists. Is it rising fuel prices, wages, benefits, taxes or something else that caused this shortfall? If it is something beyond the control of the company, then I would say an increase is justified. If it is self-inflicted, such as poor business management, an increase is not justified.

Livermore Sanitation is horrible!! Ever since our service switched to them we have had nothing but problems. Not to mention when you call to try to get things fixed the lady that you talk to is extremely rude. I can't imagine having to fork out more $ for such terrible service!
Brenda Wallace May 08, 2011 at 04:42 PM
Hey, I thought one of the reasons they recieved our contract from waste management was the lower fees. So thend a year later they want a 19 percentage increase? how many jobs have you ever heard that get that of raise? I can understand maybe 5 percent. I sure hope the council have our interest first
karen May 08, 2011 at 04:50 PM
Didn't we switch to this company to supposedly save money? They raised our rates the minute they took over from a company who had been serving our city for years and years. This is an outrage in this economy. We never should have switched to this company and perhaps its the council that needs an increase in new people come election time. Karen Allen

Livermore Sanitation has a lot of gall to ask for another increase in fees less than a year from when they started serving the City. Last year they significantly increased rates from Waste Management without any improvement in service. The poor economy does not support a 19% jump! Really, Livermore Sanitation should look at their own books and try to trim waste from their operations if they are hurting so bad. That's what the rest of us have to do! And Nikki, I agree with you, the gatekeeper customer service gal is infuriating. The City Council has to approve any rate increase. Please let them know the residents of Livermore don't support this!

I already pay $34.68 for a 20 gal. basic solid waste service. Is Livermore Sanitation asking $13 a quarter more for this service? Pretty steep for service that comes very late in the day and leaves trash blowing on the street.

How frustrating! The customer service is terrible!!! It's a battle on the phone every time. Not to mention the mess that is left in front of our house after pick up. I can't imagine paying extra for the worst service I've had in any city. I hope the city council hears it's community members!

Livermore Sanitation was the only company that bid on the contract. They came in too low. They bought new trucks as well. Like Mark Tarte said "bad management".

NOT HAPPY! Looking back at my bills when we had WM it was only $48 for the same size can, now for my 32 gal. it's going to be over $80! I miss Waste Management!

The mantra has changed. Instead of do more with less, its now pay more for less.

I, like many others have struggled to keep up with ever increasing costs of maintaining a home in Livermore. 5 weeks ago I called the customer service manager explaining the delay in my payment to Livermore Sanitation. He was unmoved and the very next pickup they took away the green and recycle cans. When I called them about this, they told me $75 would be required just for them to bring them back. 2 weeks later I recieved a letter from them threatning the action they already took if not paid within 10 days. Outraged, and at the 175% late fee per month, and demand for payment prior to services rendered, I have decided not to participate in the extortion authorized by the City Council. I urge anyone who is struggling to call the City Managers office and demand a stop to this practice and to not approve any increases. At the very least there needs to be a rate ammedment for low income households like PG&E, AT&T, and Livermore Water already offer, as required by law.

This sounds like a bait and switch to me. Our city council has an opportunity to send a clear and precise message here to all services that this type of behavior is unacceptable. The city council should be infuriated by this, if they are not then they do not have the city of Livermore's best interest first.

According to the attachment LSI is blaming the city council for bad numbers, users for getting the lower priced cans, and the economy. Sounds like they didn't plan well at all and like the going trend they are looking to have the customer foot the bill.

Quit complaining you Livermore people-pleasanton is higher and not all of us in Pleasanton are rich people.
Nicky Neau May 09, 2011 at 04:01 PM
I was pleased with the change in Sanitation companies and the fact that they offered a small container fee. I believe that the increase is probably justified... just the fuel increase from two years ago is more than the increase they are proposing. I still would like to remind the management to keep up a tight schedule and be sure to be as efficient as possible. We all have to tighten our belts.

If you can't afford to pay your garbage bills 4 dollar a month increase you shouldn't live in Livermore. Get over it.
KENDRA May 10, 2011 at 10:27 PM
Jim, While I understand that you like MANY others are having money woes, LSI still has to service our containers. Not only are we required to have them, but even if we dont pay they are obligated to still service our garbage. I've called and spoken to a nice customer service rep and she was more then happy to explain the rates and procedues to me. So, before you go barking inaccurate information to everyone, I suggest you do your research. While the redelivery fee's are high, can you blame them for removing the FREE recylcing and organics services they provide when we dont pay our bill for an extended period of time? Oh, and correction, it's not $75.00, its $67.00. Thats an $8.00 difference. And a 175% late fee? Are you sure you've done your math correctly? And a late fee every month? Hmm strange, considering I myself, only get a bill once every 3months. So I have a hard time believing they bill you every month when the rest of us get a bill every three months. And i had indeed asked about the owner letters because as a homeowner, i'd like to know what that 10day action was about. Livermore Sanitation has been in business for almost a year now, i'd have to agree with them that if they're obligated to service us, they have every right to charge a late fee or send a letter regarding some sort of collection notice. Do credit companies not do the same? People compare the garbage service to PG&E, but are missing one distinct difference,PG&E can turn our services off, LSI cannot.

Chris: I moved here in 1960 and I believe that gives me more of a right than you will ever have. Take your holy money and find a nice little place over in Atherton.

Chris May 12, 2011 at 12:03 AM
Jim: I don't give a $#!% when you moved here, that doesn't give you any more rights than the next resident. Get your priorities straight. More and more gang activity is apparent in Livermore. Dead bodies are being found accross town on a regular basis. The city council is crooked, corrupt and incompetent. You want to moan and cry over your garbage bill?? Take your entitlement mentality and shove it.
Jim McSharry May 12, 2011 at 02:50 AM
Chris: What it gives me is a perspective and history you obviously have no sense of. Your youth is apparent. At least you got some part of this right about the city council. If you are worried about the gangs and dead bodies, you are welcome to take your foul mouth and move to Mexico
Chris May 12, 2011 at 03:17 AM
It's unfortunate that you are so inept at money management that you cannot budget yourself accordingly to pay a rate that is still under what the rest of the neighboring cities incur. Thanks for admiring my youth and observation. Now, why would I want to move to Mexico when I can AFFORD TO LIVE IN LIVERMORE? What perspective and history have you referenced about this issue? None. You want something for nothing and are going to continue to cry about it.
Sue May 12, 2011 at 05:25 AM
You people in Livermore have got it cheap. so quit complaining.
