Ballot Features a Pair of Local Races

A voter guide for the Nov. 2 election.

Election Day is around the corner, and Livermore voters will have their say on two local races featured on Tuesday's ballot. Voting begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m. Your polling location can be found at the county registrar's website.

Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors

About: The park district oversees about 30 neighborhood and community parks. It also manages other recreation areas such as an equestrian center, rodeo grounds and sports fields.

What's at stake: Directors David Furst and Scott Kamena are not seeking re-election, which guarantees new faces on the board of directors. The five-member board has three open seats, with one incumbent seeking re-election and five challengers.

Candidates:

  • Bob Coomber – Freelance writer
  • Maryalice Faltings (incumbent) – Elected to the board in November 1994 and has served four consecutive terms.
  • David Hutchinson – Business management consultant
  • April Rood – Website developer and graphic designer
  • Mark Thrailkill – Senior engineering technician
  • Laureen Turner – Nurse and clinical instructor

Issue: Balancing the district's budget in a shrinking economy remains a hot issue among the candidates.

Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District Board of Education

About: The school district serves more than 13,000 students in grades K – 12.

What's at stake: All three incumbents hope to return to the five-panel board, and are being challenged by a former trustee.

Candidates:

  • Bill Dunlop (incumbent) – Has served on the board since 2004.
  • Tom McLaughlin – Served on the board from 2000 to 2008
  • Kate Runyon (incumbent) – Elected in 2006.
  • Anne White (incumbent) – Looking to earn a fifth consecutive term.

Issue: Candidates have stressed the importance of the district remaining financially sound. Last year, the district was forced to make $9 million in cuts to balance this year's budget of $102 million.
