The Alameda County coroner's bureau identified a Tracy woman who was in eastern Alameda County on Sunday.
A brown SUV driven by 43-year-old Regina Lepak was seen bearing off the right shoulder of eastbound I-580 near the Altamont Pass, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses said the vehicle overturned multiple times as it fell and burst into flames at the bottom of a steep ravine next to the highway, CHP Officer Steve Creel said.
Lepak's body was badly burned and she was pronounced dead at the scene, Creel said. There were no passengers in her SUV and no other vehicles were involved, he said.
The far right lane of I-580 was closed for emergency crews, but traffic was not impacted. The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
