Superintendent to Drivers: Be Cautious Near Schools

Police and school officials highlight traffic safety guidelines in the wake of Wednesday's accident where a student was hit by a vehicle -- the fourth such incident since the start of the school year.

Superintendent Kelly Bowers sent the following message in a phone recording Wednesday evening to households. The message was in response to Wednesday's accident where :

Good evening. This is Kelly Bowers, Superintendent of Schools, with a serious safety message for all of our families. Since August, we have had four separate incidents involving autos and student pedestrians. Two were collisions involving teens leaving school who ran into traffic and were hit by a vehicle, and one was a near miss during registration time. Just today, an .

In all cases, the students were not following basic safety rules and were darting or crossing into moving traffic without looking. Any of these collisions could have been fatal.

The and I remind our community’s drivers to be especially cautious when traveling near schools. With the new school year starting, there is traffic congestion as families familiarize themselves with getting to and from school.

Please talk to your children about traffic safety. Pedestrians should always use crosswalks and be vigilant of all vehicles. Drivers and pedestrians should not wear headsets, talk on cell phones or text in order to stay fully aware of surroundings.
