Sofa Causes I-580 Accident

Minor injuries reported after collision that temporarily closed freeway lanes this morning.

Eastbound Interstate 580 is now clear after a three-vehicle collision that temporarily closed the number 3 and 4 lanes this morning near Portola Avenue, said CHP Officer Steve Creel.

The accident was caused by a sofa that fell from a pick-up truck and blocked the number 4 lane, Creel said.

"One vehicle swerved around it and struck another vehicle," he said.

A big rig also was involved in the accident, according to CHP reports.

Initial reports said a vehicle struck the sofa and caused it to flip. That actually did not happen, said Creel.

Officials issued a Sig-Alert at 5:47 a.m. to clear the accident. The alert was lifted at 6:24 a.m.

Minor injuries were reported from the collisions, Creel said.
