Police Log: Cities Tag-Team Meth Arrests; Plus, Area Teller's 'Mistake' Saves Scammed Senior

Carjacking, auto thefts abound, and other incidents encountered July 14 to 20.

Two methamphetamine-related arrests were made Thursday after the Pleasanton Police Department executed a search warrant at a Livermore home with assistance from Livermore's police department.

A female, 29, was arrested at a house on the 1200 block of Hollyhock Street at 1:30 a.m. for suspected possession of methamphetamine.

Another resident of the home, a 44-year-old man, was picked up in his vehicle at Dublin Boulevard and Arnold Road, with help from Dublin Police Services, and arrested on suspicion of possessing meth for sale, as drug packets and a scale were found in his car, police said.

The man was also charged with child endangerment. An 11-year-old boy was in the Hollyhock home, reports said.

No details were released on the search warrant.

In other area crime news, a Fremont bank teller's "mistake" saved an elderly woman, already scammed out  of $7,500, from further losses.

The 84-year-old victim was conned into sending $7,500 to a man claiming she had won a $680,000 prize, said the Fremont Police Department.

The caller told the woman to "pay the taxes up front" in both wire funds and cash in the mail to a fictitious Florida address, which she did.

Growing suspicious, however, the woman called police to her home where the scammer called again, claiming to be her husband's former co-worker and kindly inquiring on her family. When the officer got on the line, the caller hung up.

The officer contacted the Florida post office in hopes of intervening the cash the victim sent, but was too late as the package was picked up just 30 minutes prior, police said.

The officer then took the woman to her bank to check on the wire transfer.

The bank teller, who previously assisted the woman, said she recognized the scam and warned the elderly woman, but that the victim insisted on making the wire payments.

However, the teller said she ensured the funds would not be immediately accessible and misspelled the recipient’s name on purpose to delay the transaction, police said.

The teller’s actions allowed the victim to recover all money she was going to wire, police said.

“The loss could have been significantly worse if it weren’t for her actions,” the Fremont police said in a release. As the officer took the woman home, the scammer called seven more times. She agreed to change her phone number.
