UPDATE: Man Evades Police in High Speed Chase

Officers call off pursuit of suspected stolen vehicle on westbound Interstate 580.

A driver of a suspected stolen vehicle evaded police Thursday afternoon after leading them on a high speed chase on westbound Interstate 580, said Lt. Peretti of the

"We terminated the pursuit because traffic started getting heavy, and he was able to get a good distance between us," Peretti said.

The driver reportedly reached speeds up to 90 mph and was seen weaving in and out of traffic, according to reports.

About 1:55 p.m., police attempted to stop the vehicle at First Street and Las Positas Road.

The vehicle sped off and a pursuit followed on Vasco Road.

An officer reported that items were being thrown out of the vehicle during the pursuit.

The officer said speeds reached 65 mph on Vasco Road before the vehicle drove onto a westbound Interstate 580 on-ramp.

The California Highway Patrol assisted in the chase.

Police stopped the pursuit about 2:15 p.m.

The driver is described as a heavy set white male in his 30s. He was wearing a hat, according to reports.

Police were unable to provide a description of the vehicle.
