UPDATE: Police Clear Portola Avenue of Suspicious Item

Officials say a PVC pipe capped at both ends that was found Monday morning was filled with marijuana.

A suspicious item found Monday morning on Portola Avenue was filled with marijuana, police said.

Officials temporarily shut down a portion of the road while an Alameda County Sheriff's Department bomb squad investigated the item, a PVC pipe capped at both ends.

At 8:10 a.m., police were called to the scene to check the item, which was found in the center divide near Edinburgh Drive, Sgt. Kevin Santin said.

The bomb squad detonated the pipe about 9:40 a.m. and reopened the road shortly after.
