Police Arrest Suspect in Gang-Related Shooting

Police say they have arrested final suspect identified in a March 2011 gang-related shooting.

Here's information provided by the :

Last year on March 3, 2011, at approximately 3:15 p.m., . When officers arrived, they found two subjects suffering from gunshot wounds from a shotgun. Several shotgun shells were found in the area of the shooting. The two victims (one adult, and one juvenile) were transported to a local trauma center to be treated for their injuries. Their injuries were not life threatening.

Based on interviews and evidence collected during the investigation, detectives determined the shooting was gang related. The lengthy investigation identified two suspects: Thomas Melching and Jesus Gonzalez. At the time of the shooting, Gonzalez was a juvenile. On April 7, 2011, Melching, now 21, was arrested for his involvement. Melching was charged by the District Attorney’s office for 245(a)(2) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon Using a Firearm and was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 5 years state prison.

Updated Information: On July 4, 2012, Gonzalez, now 18, was arrested and charged by the District Attorney’s Office for two counts of 245(a)(2) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon Using a Firearm. Although Gonzalez was a juvenile when the crime occurred, he will be charged as an adult.

5 yrs really....I guess those boys who terrorized Livermore with launching rocks into cars, houses, and schools will just get a lil slap. So you see boys we are letting you off easy because when your adults and attempt to murder someone you will only get 5 years. When will people become accountable for their actions. My daughter is the mother of the baby who could have been seriously hurt OR killed by the rock that was LAUNCHED into her bedroom. She only had one of the boys and his parents apologize for that. If those were my kids I would have had my kid bending over backward for those families affected. This is the problem with our society...slap them on the hands and not hold either the parents or the kids accountable then when they become adults they don't understand consequences. We need to take a stand and make these fricken idiots accountable. Two counts of attempted murder...hmmmm I am thinking a minimum of 20 yrs in San Quentin or Pelican Bay...I think that will do the trick

@Ann; What ever happen to attaching hard labor to a sentence. I seem to encounter many young local lads idlely passing theirs days without purpose or direction. Wouldn't be logical to put these youthful offenders to productive pursuits? Wouldn't it serve them better if we teach them the benefit of wholesome work? Our farmers have brought to our attention the dearth of good hands in their orchards and fields. It's about time these little thugs to learn to earn their keep. It would solve two problems at once. Ease prison crowding and providing cheap labor for the farm industry while instilling a work ethic amongst these above-mentioned. Who knows they might even pull themselves up by their own boot straps and make something out of themselves. Just my thoughts thanks.

I have a relative who was convicted of aiding and abedding a crime and did almost 20 years and the other guy who did the crime got immunity for testifying against him, it doesn't surprise me that you can shoot someone, take someone's life and get 5 years. The truth is the justice system is really screwed up and its to bad.

@ Local.... I personally knew Thomas he is not a gangster just a wanna be but never the less he is a drug junky little thief. The kid is no saint. He's just a little boy who grew up with out a possitive role model. His mom is a dope fiend n he doesn't know who his daddy is (not yet @ least...LOL). Prison is exactly were he belongs.
D.Brown July 12, 2012 at 01:03 pm
@ Wendy please let everyone know if these losers r not "real criminals".... Than who is?? I mean if u don't think shooting two ppl with a shotgun is wrong or a criminal activity than what kind of morals do u have lady?? Kinda scares me....
KingShit July 12, 2012 at 05:20 pm
I Don't really see Wat the big deal is alls they did was shoot at some scraps. Which have probably robbed jumped or killed way more people than these 2 would have in their entire lives. I know both of these guyz and the scraps got Wat was coming to them. U guyz sit there and judge but ur only getting one side of the story. R only seeing Wat these people did not y. The only mistake these 2 made was not finishing the job. 5 years is way to long. Especially when murderers and rapest get off free because the have money. Also prison doesn't make people learn lessons its a fuckin criminal college! They go in with a vague knowledge of the streets and come out with a masters or doctorate in thugism. I hope they flourish in there. Stay up Thomas ur almost home!

This is for Wendy. The red lips tattooed on the neck can stand for "13" a known gang symbol. And the color for the gang "13" is also red. Gonzalez has a tattoo of Red Lips on his neck. This could signify that he is a member of that gang. You might want to study up on gangs and their culture. I do not pretend to know why, how or what happened on the day of the shooting, but it may have been gang related.

We are judging. And you and your friends are trash. I don't care whether you're in prison or back in some crappy ghetto, or what lesson it teaches you. Just get out of Livermore - you're not wanted or needed here.

Don't worry, based on your communication skills, you will join them soon. Stay in school, life is going to be rough on you.
Tom Ness July 13, 2012 at 12:36 am
Thanks to the liberal lawyers that would be cruel and unusual punishment, I agree they need hard labor camps
EvilTounguesDontMatter July 13, 2012 at 02:50 am
I can appreciate your defense but there is no need, and I feel your emotions but you really are only hurting your friend’s case. You should hold off on your comments at least until the last one is sentenced. None of these people know the truth or full story and that’s ok, they don’t need to, they aren’t important anyway so don’t worry about what they say. It doesn’t matter, they are not the Judge in the end, we will ALL have to answer to a higher power eventually and everyone sins in one way or another, no one is perfect or without sin. I’m sure a few of these people making stabs at the boys and their families are just waiting for those people to make rude comments back and divulge information that can be used in court. Be better and smarter than that. Some of them are probably the officers working on the case, so don’t fall for it. They will use EVERYTHING you say. And as long as they (shooters and “victims”) learned a lesson from this and learn how to deal with issues the right way and make better decisions they will grow to be better people and they will go on to have successful lives, put this behind them, and not repeat it, regardless of what anyone thinks. The best thing for the boys is constructive support, being positive and not making them look even worse. If you really care about them for their sake stop posting anything about the case, don’t talk to anyone about it and don’t even read the comments. It will only add fuel to the fire.

Kristofer,
Thanks for monitoring the behavior. Just curious to why you didn't delete the first comment of this thread refering to the parents as trash. It seems to be in violation of the terms of agreement.
DC July 13, 2012 at 04:13 pm
Spoken like a well-seasoned, familiar-with-the-justice-system piece of trash.
Wendy Grant July 14, 2012 at 01:05 pm
There is way too much judging and accusations in most of the comments with stories with this kind of content. Blaming the parents, the single mom who is working two jobs. The parents that don't make enough to pay the 150+ to pay to play the sports they still have in high school and middle school. There is definatly a gang problem with the nortenos and sorenos that needs to be addresses. Ranting and raving on here, blaming parents? Unless you have kids, you shouldnt even speak about anything. You are making these informative articles turn into witch hunts, which accomplishes NOTHING! UNLESS, putting people down makes you feel better about yourself. Commenting on grammar, Im viewing this on a Droid, which changes words. Thorazine big gulps, for.the judgemental and down right mean people on here.
Peggy July 15, 2012 at 11:26 am
Fortunately God will be the ultimate judge . Not just for the criminals but for everyone that "judges" others . I agree with others on here, if you don't know what the hell your talking about than shut the hell up.
GG July 15, 2012 at 04:48 pm
Everyone just needs to shut up with your comments if you guys don't know the whole story of what went down. Jesus was my bf at the time. And those lips he got tarred were to show the love we got for eachother so you can say that its gang related but we both no its not ;) haha. For your info & 5 years ain't nun he'll pull through.

We need concealed carry permits. We aren't safe in our own streets. Hand guns need to be carried in this town. Everytime I'm on this site its just more violent crimes.

It isn't up to the gov. to help raise your kids. The stork didn't drop the kid off unexpectedly. IfRead More you can't afford kids then don't have them.

Wow, so quick to jump to conclusions and judge. Maybe T.G. BUYS the child's lunch. Every schoolRead More sells hot lunch every day. At the majority of our schools, more lunches are bought than given for free.
DeAnna Senft McDaid June 13, 2013 at 12:43 pm
The schools give us 2 options as parents. 1. Buying lunches on campus or 2. Send them with a lunch.Read More Clearly the author of this chose number 1 and the school was OUT leaving the child with NO 3rd option. Shame on that school.

A great issue! However, the rodeo is nothing but animal cruelty wrapped up as "tradition"Read More and "entertainment". Why would the animal's welfare become a concern now? Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens. "Bucking broncos" and steers are provoked with electric prods, sharp sticks, caustic ointments, and the pinching "bucking" strap, which is what really makes them jump, they are not "wild" and "dangerous" . The cowboys earn points by spurring the bucking horse. I have seen them up close and many are bleeding. Calves, roped when running, have their necks snapped back by the lasso, often resulting in neck and back injuries, bruises, broken bones, and internal bleeding. After their short and painful "careers," animals in rodeos are sent to the slaughterhouse. Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, describes the animals discarded from rodeos for slaughter as being "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached [to the flesh] was the head, neck, leg, and belly. I have seen animals with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs. I have seen as much as 2 to 3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin." Every national animal protection organization opposes rodeos because of their inherent cruelty. Don't feel bad everyone, I used to love the rodeo too. Before I knew better...

Something to consider and not pushing it aside because I feel its unimportant, but what I'd love toRead More have access to is how the riders that were hurt are doing today. Two bull riders got gored, one in the back and he was down and out for a bit and then obviously not "okay" as he stumbled out of the arena and then another that got his leg hurt and he couldn't get himself over the gate on his own. Left saturday's Rodeo hoping they were okay and would love follow up if at all possible. Thanks!

Thank you! That is what we want to know too. We have had more power outages this week than in theRead More 20+ years total that we have lived in this house!
Lynn June 8, 2013 at 07:03 pm
It would be nice to know, indeed. When my husband called to report the outage the recording saidRead More there were no outages in our area, which was clearly incorrect.
AT June 9, 2013 at 06:00 pm
I got the same thing, no outages when I called. I requested to be contacted by PG&E to explainRead More the problem. No call for that but I did get a "survey" call about their automated system. We have also lived here for 20+ years and never had this many outages.
