'Pedal Confusion' Causes Teen to Back Truck Through Business

A Livermore business owner got a not-so-appreciated gift on Christmas eve

A new driver got a crash course in driving after he mistook the accelerator for the brake, causing him to drive backward through the Cannon Fitness Studio in Livermore this morning. Police officials say the 16-year-old driver was trying to back into a parking stall near 1324 N Vasco Road just before noon when he had "pedal confusion."

"The car went backwards, jumping the sidewalk, driving through the front door, the glass and entire length of the business at the Cannon Fitness Studio," Officer Traci Rebiejo said. "Thankfully the business was closed at the time or it would have been a horrific crash."

Rebiejo says that although the driver had other minors in the car, no one was injured during the crash.

According to Rebiejo, police were able to reach the owner who has already started working on having the glass replaced and the building boarded up.

"We called the building inspector who said there was no structural damage to the building," Rebiejo commented.
