Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

31-year-old Livermore man found near intersection of Murrieta Boulevard and Portola Avenue.

Bay City News Service

A man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Livermore early this morning, police said.

An officer on patrol found the motorcyclist around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Murrieta Boulevard and Portola Avenue, Livermore police Sgt. Keith Graves said.

Graves said the man — later identified as 31-year-old Daniel Vanderhoofven of Livermore — is believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Murrieta Boulevard when he may have lost control around a turn and collided with a sound wall.

The intersection was blocked off and should be reopened around 6 a.m., police said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Words cannot describe the shock and disbelief. Love you Daniel. I will always remember your laugh.

splitting lanes is legal. people driving cars need to understand that motorcycles have the same rights as other drivers. just because they drive 2 wheels instead of 4 doesnt make them any different, we all bleed red. back to splitting lanes, bikes are aloowed to do it, they are air cooled ( small exception are water cooled) and is locked up in traffic they become over heated and risk catchign on fire. it doesnt mater the reason for the 3 accidents in question, im not complaining about the car accidents that happen every day on our city streets. there are more vehicle accidents in a day than motorcycles in a month. all need to watch out for each other. all belong on the roads

If your hearts and prayers really go out to Daniels family, please do not send out these pictures or video. His family is my family and I have spent the entire day trying to console kids who loved him dearly. They dont need someone showing them this stuff. Please have a heart and delete what you have.

Megan and Local...you must have insider information that confirms he was speeding or you might be just assuming.

Mike S - why don't you just stop with your rant and let people mourn this poor guy without running your mouth and picking apart what people say. Do you just come on here to argue with people?
George S August 09, 2012 at 01:07 AM
I highly encourage (and always do so myself) moving your vehicle closer to the skip line so the motorcycle can’t pass. this is a perfectly legal manuveur to do, as you own the space around your car to the left and right skip line, and the motorcycle is intruding on it.
George S August 09, 2012 at 01:10 AM
Lane splitting, even where legal, can possibly leave the m/c rider LEGALLY responsible. In California, it is legal only if done safely: "'Safely' is always very much a judgment call. The mere fact that an accident happened while a rider was lane splitting is very strong evidence that on that occasion it wasn't safe to do so...If you've been involved in an accident you will have a hard job convincing an insurance adjuster that the accident was not COMPLETELY your fault.
WK August 09, 2012 at 01:15 AM
More vehicle/car accidents in a day than motorcycles in month...yes, of course. It is just because there are a lot more cars than motorcycles on the roads. Never liked motorcycles. Folks riding them have to be slow and careful...otherwise, at one point or the other, they will pay the price with their lives just like this person did. Don't know him personally, but I certainly feel sorry about this incident and for the family members.

George S, if you do that to me your mirror will be kicked clean off your car and you'll be lucky if you don't get your ASS kicked. And that will be completely YOUR fault.

george....grow up. This accident and the loss of a mans life has nothing to do with lane spliting. A bike has every right to the lane as you do. Just cus you have to sit in traffic doesnt mean you need to block a bike from going by you. I've never riden a bike, or never will because of people like you, but I've grown up around them, and they have been part of my family's life. Why would a bike driving by you while you are sitting in traffic bother you in the least bit? Do you hate your job that much where you need to take your aggressions out on a biker. George, just stay out of the far left lane then. Use all the other lanes and take up as much of it as you want. Bikers only pass on your right when a car is in the far left lane. And if you just happen to be in that lane, stay to the center of the lane, or scoot to the left George. It wont kill you.

I agree with all of the above. I lost my dad on the altamont 8 yrs ago du eto some idiot not paying attention. He was in his own lane, she changed lanes on him, never looked back. left him in teh middle of traffic doing 60mph pluse. Thank god he died on impact adn didnt lay there suffering while she drove her ass away. Accidents are accidents, not at faults...(most of teh time) but none the less these sorts of things are tragic and leave big voids in alot of peoples lifes.....I didnt know daniel, but I hope he is riding free up there with my dad and fellow motorcyclists! RIP Brother!

George S - You are a genius. Next time you get someone killed even if you are very much right, think that, because of you someone special left this world. But go ahead and smirk about it; you will teach us a lesson. It is unfortunate that many people have the same attitude as you, even some of very intelligent friends. I sincerely apologize to everyone on this forum to rant about something unrelated to this tragedy.
Matt August 09, 2012 at 03:59 AM
Sorry for your loss, Tami. Guys like George are heartless, brainless, senseless morons that think theyre so superior that they can take other peoples safety into there own hands and have no conscience.
Shaniqua Kitty August 09, 2012 at 08:23 AM
Matt, I second that. George S is lucky if his driver window doesn't get hit with something metal or some 5/8" Nuts go flying to his windshield from my jacket pocket !
Shaniqua Kitty August 09, 2012 at 08:24 AM
George S. WILL get what's coming to him soon.

To the family and friends of Daniel...My prayers and condolences go out to you. I am so sorry for your loss! And...to George S...Shame on me to even dignify you with a response, but perhaps it may trigger some moral awakening in your cold little black heart! You are heartless and obviously don't like yourself very much to show such disregard for others. "I highly encourage (and always do so myself) moving your vehicle closer to the skip line so the motorcycle can’t pass." WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? You would probably stick your foot out in front of an old person as well! Lord have mercy on your soul!

You need to re-read the California Vehicle code, or just read it for the first time. It is perfectly legal for a motorcycle to share a lane with a car. And and little FYI, If you were to perform your idiotic maneuver on myself or any of my other fellow riders, you may earn yourself a trip to the ER..
The Real Anon August 09, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Don't be fooled by the semantics of lane splitting. There is no law making lane splitting in California legal. It is just that there is nothing making it unlawful. I have never once seen a motorcycle legally split lanes. Why? Because they switch back and forth between lanes without giving a signal and because they do so when it is not safe. If any lane splitting accidents occur, and the car driver has not left his or her lane, then it is always the fault of the rider because if it were safe no accident could have occurred. As for Matt and Shaniqua, they are hooligans who feel entitled to vandalize the property of others. Surely Karma will catch up with them at some point, probably in the form of somebody's bumper or trunklid.
Matt August 09, 2012 at 11:46 PM
I second everything you just said
DAVE McCULLOUGH August 11, 2012 at 07:08 AM
George sorry I have to tell you this WRONG you/we dont "own" any such thing as for your perfectly legal manuveur well just pull that one on any officer riding a motorcycle and then be sure to post how it worked out.

Thank you to everyone writing condolences. Its nice to see how many people got to experience their life with Daniel in it. I know I thank God I got the short time I did with him. He changed my life for the better and will continue to do so with many, many great memories. I can't wrap my mind around the fact he's really gone but there has to be a reason for it. I will always love him and can't express how much I miss him already.
