Man Trying to Flee Scene of Crash Arrested on DUI Charge

Police say man is lucky to be alive after his car was struck by a suspected drunken driver on North Livermore Avenue.

A man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol was arrested late Tuesday after fleeing the scene of a car accident,  Sgt. Keith Graves said.

At around 11 p.m. emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash at the intersection of North Livermore Avenue and Las Positas Road.

When officers arrived, witnesses said the driver of an SUV ran toward the nearby and . The man, later identified as Joseph Munoz of Fremont, was found trying to hop a fence by Sgt. John Hurd.

Munoz, 34, who was driving a Chevy Tahoe, was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of a felony DUI and a hit-and-run, Hurd said.

Witnesses told police that a Toyota Camry was driving southbound on North Livermore Avenue. The driver, a 41-year-old Tracy man, was making a left turn onto Las Positas Road when he was blindsided by an SUV that ran a red light, Hurd said.

The SUV suffered major front damage and the Camry's passenger side was caved in.

The driver of the Camry was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for unknown injuries. He is in stable condition and is expected to survive, police said.

"He's lucky to be alive," Hurd said. "We're very happy that he didn't have any passengers with him. If he did, we would be looking at a fatality."

Munoz is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $110,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Department 701 of the Gale-Schenone Hall of Justice in Pleasanton.
