Inmate Commits Suicide at Santa Rita Jail

Alameda County Sheriff's Office investigating suicide at Dublin jail.

Here's information provided by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office:

On Saturday, September 1, 2012, deputies responded to a cell in Santa Rita Jail where inmate Dennis Jimenez, aged 54, was attempting to hang himself.

Deputies entered the cell where Jimenez was the only occupant and cut him from a homemade noose fashioned from a bed sheet. The sheet was attached to the upper bunk of the cell, and Jimenez used his own body weight to cut off the blood flow to his brain.

Santa Rita staff began lifesaving measures at the jail and Jimenez was transported by ambulance to Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton where he was pronounced dead.

Jimenez had been in custody at Santa Rita Jail since March 11, 2012 when he was arrested by the Oakland Police Department for DUI, theft and drug charges.

Jimenez was released on the DUI and theft charges, but remained in jail to serve his sentence on the drug charge. He was due to be released on September 5, 2012.

Per protocol, Sheriff’s detectives from the Eden Township Substation arrived to investigate the scene, as well as Coroner’s Investigators.

This is very sad that someone felt they had nothing to live for just days before being released. Treatment at county facilities are limited, 60 day program, then no followup. Also, how long was he hanging and went unnoticed, that is really sad part. Cameras everywhere but no one saw a thing??? Come on....
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:19 am
You got yourself a point there !
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:23 am
Thats my uncle & people need to grow up & stop talking about him if they never met him or new anything about him ... If he was out today no one would say anything , just leave it as that ... & i it wasnt for neglagence he would have still been alive <3
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:27 am
Thank you for your prayers this is his neice & may you be blessed
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:29 am
This isnt a realationship post , you can take that somewhere else
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:30 am
Hey elizabeth do you know him
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:34 am
Hey he is in a better place now , if the county had the right medical facility and if the laws werent so backwards people wouldnt be sitting in jail for petty stuff , they keep inmates that do petty stuff for 25 to life , but keep inmates that do worser crimes in for about 5-6 years and then they do the same thing , aint that a shame , THE LAW SUCKS
destiny September 6, 2012 at 04:36 am
And you think you know everything dont you ? well let me ask you this , did you know he lived for 5 kids & a wife ? Get your stories straight or dont talk at all

Look here Destiny's Child, I didn't IMPLY your Uncle was seeking Attention I was stating a Fact about what really happens at Santa Rita. Now if I had addressed your Uncle I would have provided a more Colorful Vocabulary as I don't have Sympathy for Addicts.

And remember folks, we are talking about another human being, who needed help and didn't get it. Have some compassion, if not for him, then for his family. He probably did not have the required ungodly amount of money necessary for medical treatment. And like so many others in jails and prisons in California, it doesn't matter that you may be innocent, because our faulty judicial system now finds you guilty first, and if you happen to have thousands of dollars lying around, you may be given the opportunity to retain council to defend you and prove your innocence. But don't count on it. This is America, and the state of California is in the business of building and filling prisons, so that politicians and the prison administrators live high on the hog with the money they take from us to do so.

It's disappointing to watch Patch donkey's continually guess at the facts.
Mike S September 6, 2012 at 02:22 pm
You were doing well until you made the statement about California being in the business of filling prisions. Society fills prisons...people make individual choices which result in time spent in prison. The state of California does not randomly place people in prison.

So true, Mike. Apparently some folks don't comprehend personal responsibility. You pay for the mistakes you make....don't blame someone else or the system...only you can keep yourself from getting into trouble in the first place. The people posting that they are victims are the ones who typically are either not smart enough to stay out of trouble or they are enablers of those who can't keep their noses clean. Time to grow up................
Tammi September 6, 2012 at 03:27 pm
Leilani/Destiny, I am sorry for you loss and sorry for the things anonymous people feel entitled to say when they are hidden behind their computer screens. Regardless of whatever mistakes he made or whatever demons he fought in his life, he was still human and deserves your love and respect in death. Surround yourselves with those who can support you through this difficult time and don’t waste your time arguing with faceless bullies here.

Look people, before you talk on a story that was published get your facts first because they don't give you the whole story. Dennis has been fighting many addictions and mental issues such as bipolar & depression now if you have the slightest clue as to what that does to a person who dosent take meds to cure the brain then I suggest you keep quite or do some research so you get a better understanding on suicide. Ppl committ sucide in and out of jail and most cases are related to depression. So plz if you don't have anything nice to say then don't speak at all! Dennis was loved by many family members and will always be loved. So let's stop bullys not only in schools but on the streets and in your own home. If you start in your home then maybe one day it will soon die out just like racisim and stereotyping! Let's strive for happiness and positive attitudes!
Tammi September 6, 2012 at 05:35 pm
Anna,
Very well said. I'm sorry for your loss. From the sound of your post, you sound like you are probably a family member. I didn’t know Dennis, but obviously many of his family and friends are reading the comments here. For those of you who don’t know him but feel the need to pass judgement, take a moment to imagine what it would feel like if it was your loved one being trashed here...

Voter with an ID,
>Apparently some folks don't comprehend personal responsibility. You pay for the mistakes you make....don't blame someone else or the system...only you can keep yourself from getting into trouble in the first place. This is certainly NOT true. personal responsibility is a subjective notion. There are many victim-less crimes (like drug use) for which people are wrongly punished. It is completely appropriate to blame the system for these cases. Many innocent people have been punished for no crime or mistake committed by them. While Jimenez may have been guilty of some things, it would be absurd to suggest that his end is somehow a payment for mistakes.

haha, nice rambling . Get your tin foil hat off, the police have better things to do than set people up. Were they after his pot of gold or secret map to the unknown science of Benjamin Franklin? He was in jail because he made bad choices. Depending who you are, you can count suicide among them.
Micheal September 14, 2012 at 12:43 pm
So Ronnie King police had better things to do rite .....

This is just another comment that I greatly doubt will matter, and I have no relation or association with the deceased, but I fault the inhuman treatment society has chosen to impose upon its citizens for drug use. Here is a perfect example: A Dui is a perilous crime, and for it he was released. Theft? There is nothing worse than a thief---yet, for theft , he was released. Now for the crime in which the only victim was himself, and the worry to the system of social caring was the only constituent of concern, this man faced at 54 years, (surely something that ought qualify a man as venerable to at least be not locked in a cage for his own damnation of self-abuses) 6 long, hot, hellish months in a facility to shape one's self-esteem into a decrepit, rotten, pea-sized scrap of fly-spit, and I of adequate social stature do hereby not condemn this soul as cowardly nor weak. This valuable human being is gone because of a rampant neglect of human nature that is sure to diminish the quality of living of every soul in this learning society. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee. Thanks, Dennis.

Wow, so quick to jump to conclusions and judge. Maybe T.G. BUYS the child's lunch. Every schoolRead More sells hot lunch every day. At the majority of our schools, more lunches are bought than given for free.
DeAnna Senft McDaid June 13, 2013 at 12:43 pm
The schools give us 2 options as parents. 1. Buying lunches on campus or 2. Send them with a lunch.Read More Clearly the author of this chose number 1 and the school was OUT leaving the child with NO 3rd option. Shame on that school.

A great issue! However, the rodeo is nothing but animal cruelty wrapped up as "tradition"Read More and "entertainment". Why would the animal's welfare become a concern now? Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens. "Bucking broncos" and steers are provoked with electric prods, sharp sticks, caustic ointments, and the pinching "bucking" strap, which is what really makes them jump, they are not "wild" and "dangerous" . The cowboys earn points by spurring the bucking horse. I have seen them up close and many are bleeding. Calves, roped when running, have their necks snapped back by the lasso, often resulting in neck and back injuries, bruises, broken bones, and internal bleeding. After their short and painful "careers," animals in rodeos are sent to the slaughterhouse. Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, describes the animals discarded from rodeos for slaughter as being "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached [to the flesh] was the head, neck, leg, and belly. I have seen animals with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs. I have seen as much as 2 to 3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin." Every national animal protection organization opposes rodeos because of their inherent cruelty. Don't feel bad everyone, I used to love the rodeo too. Before I knew better...

Something to consider and not pushing it aside because I feel its unimportant, but what I'd love toRead More have access to is how the riders that were hurt are doing today. Two bull riders got gored, one in the back and he was down and out for a bit and then obviously not "okay" as he stumbled out of the arena and then another that got his leg hurt and he couldn't get himself over the gate on his own. Left saturday's Rodeo hoping they were okay and would love follow up if at all possible. Thanks!
