UPDATE: I-580 Lanes Blocked, Crews Work to Clean Up Spilled Big-Rig Fuel

Updated at 12:05 p.m.

All lanes of I-580 are expected to open by 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, said CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.

As of noon, crews were still cleaning up excessive amounts of fuel that spilled into the road after the crash.

All but one lane of westbound Interstate Highway 580 is blocked in Pleasanton this morning because of a crash involving two big-rigs and at least one other vehicle, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was reported shortly before 9 a.m. on westbound Highway 580 near Hopyard Road, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. One of the big-rigs overturned and its fuel tank ruptured, spilling between 75 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway, Van Eckhardt said.

Ambulances responded to the scene, but Van Eckhardt did not immediately have information about possible injuries caused by the crash. Caltrans crews are also en route to clean up the fuel spill, according to Van Eckhardt.

He said the far right westbound lane remains open but the other lanes of the highway will likely be closed through the late morning hours. Van Eckhardt said traffic will be backed up since "alternate routes out there are very hard to come by," with motorists only able to take surface streets around the scene of the crash.

580 in the last year or so has become a death trap.

This construction is so dangerous. The lanes are too narrow, not straight, and the barriers on both sides of the freeway are scary. Plus their are not enough chp on the freeways right now in the liv/pleas corridor. I was stuck in traffic because there was no shoulder for a truck to pull over to with a flat. Didnt mind the traffic, but I am sure riding the rim destroyed it and a truck going 5mph is dangerous. I have seen some crazy and dangerous things on this route. Swerving cars text messaging people distracted. Very dangerous. Plus it should have signs for 55mph. People are still driving 75plus.

I agree. 880 through San Leandro and Oakland is bad too.. We need to complain. Too much construction all @ once and too many agressive, speeding drivers. You aren't even safe in slow lanes as they weave in and out of traffic accelerating before they have cleared the lane.

Too many cars on roadways, more than the safe capacity. Too many speeding drivers, driving while distracted. I would like to see more tickets given out for cell phone use while driving.

I would like to see more tickets for following to close, speeding and unsafe lane change, I see that a lot more than I see cell phone violations. On 880, 580, & Vasco. What I'd really like to see is more Chp period. Even parked on the side of the freeway with radar, it's a deterrent . People automatically slow down. Although while in the slow lane on 880 we passed chp with people pulled over. I slowed down as you are supposed to by law & the woman behind me got pissed off. She got in the next lane and jerked her car over @ me like she was going to crash into me....
