Livermore police arrested a popular golf coach on suspicion of sexually assaulting boys between the ages of 12 and 17 just one day before he was to receive an award from the Northern California Section of the PGA honoring his work with youth.

Alameda County prosecutors charged Andrew Nisbet, 31, with 65 counts of sexual abuse and assault following an investigation by Livermore police. Nisbet was arrested Saturday and the banquet where Nisbet was to receive the 2013 Junior Golf Leader Award at the Contra Costa Country Club was scheduled for Sunday.

A press release announcing the award praised Nisbet's success in the field of youth golf: "Andy has been a tremendous contributor to Junior Golf, creating a variety of inviting programs for young people and teaching golf professionals how to get started on this track."

Nisbet was director of instruction at Los Positas Golf Club and the founder of GRIP Academy, which drew students from across the East Bay.

Why is he so popular? And how about investigating his close circle of friends? I bet there is a lot more to this story. And where does he live? (what city) so I can warn people in my neighborhood if he lives here.

Weird...arrested literally just before he's about to receive an award for his work with youth.
Terry December 11, 2013 at 10:26 AM
what was the team mom doing when this pedophile coach was staying in hotels in Chicago and other cities with these underage children? parents DO NOT let your children stay in hotels with any man whether he is a coach, a priest, a teacher, scout leader etc. Go with them or don't join traveling youth groups. To: City of Livermore........ who allowed you to use my tax money to give to this pedophile golf coach to pay for a ridiculously expensive recruitment video on YouTube? yes that's right. The city of Livermore owns the Las Positas Golf course just like they own the police department that arrested their fellow city government pediphile employee. Government out of control bad government hiring and spending.

This is so sickening. We as parents think we are giving our children a opportunity for the future and instead we are putting them in the hands of a sexual abuser. I hope he enjoys prison. From what I hear its not pretty in there for ones that hurt children. Maybe we should lock him in a room with all the parents and let them take care of him.
BobG December 11, 2013 at 10:45 AM
Supposedly, this has been going for 6+ years. In all that time not one kid mentioned something to their parent? or to other staff members at Las Positas Golf Course? Have we made too difficult for children to raise these issues or are we not taking the time to listen? Why did this go on for so long?
Andy Smith December 11, 2013 at 10:50 AM
Terry: That's a bit harsh, and blames the wrong people. Nobody knew what was going on, but as soon as it was discovered, action was taken. Don't condemn all youth programs because of one bad apple.
CMNSENSE December 11, 2013 at 11:38 AM
At Terry and Bob: Blame game isn't applicable here when you're dealing with a sick predator. Kids are ashamed and have been preyed upon by a "mentor." Don't EVER blame the kids! As a parent of athletes it's impossible to be there EVERY second of the day. Yes we all must be diligent and all look out for each others kids, but these sick pigs find a way…
BobG December 11, 2013 at 11:58 AM
CMNSENSE - this isn't about blame and I'm a little surprised you made it into that. This about dealing with child predictors that have always, and will continue, to pop up in our society. I think you'll agree that they have an uncanny ability to hide in plain sight. The parents need to bear some burden to create an environment where children can come to them when something is wrong. No parent can be with their kid 100% of the time! nor should they be, but they try to do a good job at talking with their kids. Thankfully this was reported and caught now else we may have had another Jerry Sandusky.
CMNSENSE December 11, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Agree Bob, must keep the conversation open with our kids and keep a constant watchful eye…

It will take a while..but eventually that filthy animal will be on the Megan's Law website...where we can all see exactly where he lives. Remember folks...pedophiles arent exactly creepy looking old men...they could be anyone... your child's teacher, coach, uncle, father, grandfather, mother's boyfriend, friend of the family....they have the potential to be anyone. Our best defense is teaching our kids early that their body belongs to them, and they have a right to defend it, no matter what & no matter who it is. Check the Megans Law website regularly( I do-1st week of the month), if you have a gut feeling something is wrong, ask your child & dont just brush your gut feeling away. Let them know you can handle anything they tell you & you will love them not matter what. Do not trust someone, just because they seem nice... your child is the most precious gift you will ever receive, treat them that way...protect them with that thought in mind.

Arrested = convicted now? Who needs courts or rights or the presumption of innocence anyway? I don't know the guy but this isn't North Korea.
Estaf December 11, 2013 at 01:32 PM
What is disturbing is he was dealing with the youth in this area, and even passed the fingerprinting required to work with children.
Mari December 11, 2013 at 01:46 PM
I ham happy that the system is finally catching up with what they are hired to do now the worry comes when this P. meets with the Judge in court sometimes some of those Judges are not much better the the offender if you know what I mean went through a horrific Judge during my divorce that's still not finished going on 8 years all because the Judge I had in court feels sorry for my cheating husband only because I think, he/she (judge). And my ex attorney both could relate and have gone so easy on him ho poor thing this kind of kindness towards the bad guy needs to stop once and for all. MICROCHIPPING THE BAD GUYS WOULD REALLY BE BETTER THAN ANYTHING.
Estaf December 11, 2013 at 02:08 PM
punx- read the San Jose Mercury News Article the guy admitted to some of the offenses, doesn't that mean something. As a Christian we are taught to forgive, but forgiveness does take time, Thankfully he and his wife didn't have children! I feel no compassion toward him in any way, only to his poor spouse, and the children who were effected by this monster. It is a shame that he wasn't caught before, When you have a coach that has a impressive credential, When he was hired back in 2006 as a golf coach, he showed articles on how he was listed as one of the top 50 golf coaches in the country for young golfers. We want the best for our children

@Terry – Andrew Nisbet has never been an employee of the City of Livermore. Yes, the golf course land is owned by the City and it is operated as an enterprise. However, its operations are performed by three separate, privately-owned businesses which contract those operations to the City. Those businesses are the pro shop, the restaurant and the landscaping. The DeBenedetti’s run the pro shop and Nisbet worked for them, not the City. Te City had nothintdo with the production of the video. Last year, when the City sought bids for the golf course enterprise, dozens of golf course patrons and parents spoke in glowing terms of Mr. Nisbet and the youth program which is operated through the pro shop. The public also spoke in favor of continuing the operations through the current contractors and not operating the golf course through the City. This predatory type of activity is insidious and parents must be vigilant. Mr. Delfino is correct, these types of people have always been among us.
BobG December 11, 2013 at 05:05 PM
Maybe time to reconsider those decisions.
JMB December 11, 2013 at 08:44 PM
He passed fingerprints because he hadnt been caught...yet..these predators don't walk around with a warning sign attached...we as parenys must really use judgement before leaving kids to travel alone..
timothy December 11, 2013 at 10:07 PM
Am Christian. And since he admitted these acts, I do not forgive him. Period.
concerned December 13, 2013 at 03:24 AM
BobG..great point...someone had to know...person in charge if they didn't they should have...this is will have a terrible consequence to the victims first and all other attempts at getting kids involved in activities that they should be able to enjoy for life...I feel sad for the future of the involvement of juniors to enjoy great learning activities...the one in charge had to know something...a Joe Paterno situation will evolve
Jake Nu December 14, 2013 at 12:09 AM
To say that the pro shop knew about these sick acts is absurd. I worked in that pro shop along side this disgusting man, and if i ever found out about these crude acts, he wouldve been going to jail on a stretcher. The owners are great people with children of their own, and they fired him the second they found out. The only person to blame is the man that committed the crimes
Mari December 14, 2013 at 10:33 AM
Concerned, you really would be surprised! I used to believe it that someone must know what goes on behind closed doors. But these type of abusers are so good at what they do that now I believe that these abuses go undetected we educate ourselves and our families and only then can we bring these abusers to light. "Master Manipulators, my name for these people. And no, good wholesome people may not know how to detect these animals.
BobG December 14, 2013 at 10:42 AM
I am sure that if anyone did know anything, or was told anything, it will come out in the investigation. Just like the Sandusky case, now that the crime has been exposed the truth will come out. One could ask: Should they have known? To Mari's point above, almost impossible because predators are very good at duping people. Until all the facts come out no aspersions should be cast as they can be very dangerous and take on a life of their own.
