Firefighters Save Home From Blaze

Emergency crews quickly knock down garage fire on 700 block of Katrina Street.

Firefighters are being credited with preventing a raging garage fire from spreading into a home on the 700 block of Katrina Street.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the house at about 11 p.m. Friday.

"When we arrived on scene there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage," said Livermore Pleasanton Fire Department Chief Jim Miguel. "It was an extremely heavy fire load."

In addition, two vehicles in front of the garage also were starting to catch fire. The blaze also spread to an outbuilding near the house, Miguel said.

"We were afraid the fire was extending into the house through the garage," he said.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from several vantage points, which included going in the home and pushing the flames out of the residence from the interior garage door, Miguel said.

The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes.

The garage and outbuilding were both a total loss, Miguel said, adding the blaze caused about $80,000 in damages.

A cause has yet to be determined and officials have no reason to believe the fire is suspicious, Miguel said.

The home is occupied by a family of six. All family members were out of the home when firefighters arrived on scene.

One person was treated and released on scene for smoke inhalation, Miguel said.

Four engines and a fire truck responded to the blaze.
