Fire Crews Rescue Bicyclist In Ravine, Area Teeming With Rattlesnakes

From the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department:

Livermore-Pleasanton Fire’s Engine 99 and Alameda County Fire’s Engine 8 and Station 20 units along with Battalion 3 responded to the Arroyo Staging (Del Valle Dam Regional Park) for a call involving a bicyclist who fell off the main road into the ravine.

The call became a low angle rescue as the victim, a 13 year old boy, fell down approximately 35 feet from a single track road to the bottom of a ravine. Because of his location, crews had to hike in approximately ½ mile just to reach the victim.

The victim sustained rib injuries and multiple abrasions. Crews provided Advance Life Support care and were able to package him up in a stokes basket and carry him out to a waiting helicopter. REACH helicopter transported the boy to Children’s Hospital for further evaluation.

To further complicate the rescue, there were at least 12 rattlesnakes in close proximity to the victim. Visitors to the park this summer should take extra precautions and have a heightened awareness when recreating in the area.
