UPDATE: Man Killed in Jump From I-580 Overpass Was 23-year-old From Fremont

Thursday morning commute traffic was backed up for hours.

are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Fremont man who jumped off the west side of the Santa Rita Road overpass onto the westbound lanes of Interstate 580 early Thursday morning.

He was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer, Pleasanton Police Sgt. Mike Tryphonas said in a statement. 

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, and no other cars were involved. 

Police received cell phone calls around 6 a.m. Thursday that the man had jumped.

Pleasanton police, along with the California Highway Patrol, responded and found the man lying in the No. 3 westbound lane just west of the Santa Rita Road overpass. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officers closed three of the four westbound lanes, and Pleasanton police closed the wesbound on-ramp from northbound Santa Rita Road onto the freeway.

The Santa Rita Road overpass is protected by an 8-foot-tall fence that extends the full length of the overpass on both sides to prevent people from falling onto the freeway. 

The area where the man jumped, according to police, was directly over the middle of the westbound lanes. 

The man's name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The affected lanes were open by 7:30 a.m.

. That death was ruled a suicide.
