UPDATE: Pair Arrested After Hit-and-Run

A school was also placed on lockdown during a police investigation.

Two people were arrested Friday shortly after a police pursuit that ended with a traffic collision near the intersection of North Livermore and Junction avenues. During the investigation police placed the nearby charter high school on lockdown. Read the updates log below from our breaking news coverage for more information:

5:15 p.m. update: Livermore Police Lt. Matt Sarsfield said the incident began at 3:06 p.m. when a Kohl's loss prevention employee contacted police to report a suspicious person in the department store. The employee then provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle. Officers in the area spotted the suspect and after running a license plate discovered the vehicle was reported stolen out of Pleasanton.

A short pursuit followed when the suspect sped off, which ended when the man crashed the White Honda he was driving. Police said about five to six other vehicles were hit by the suspect during the pursuit.

After the crash near the intersection of North Livermore and Junction avenues the man took off running into the Portola Meadwos apartment complex and into the nearby Livermore Valley Charter High School campus.

Police temporarily placed the school on lockdown and set up a perimeter around the campus.

An officer then spotted the suspect running across the school field and arrested him. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of a felony hit-and-run and evading police. A female passenger in the reported stolen vehicle was also arrested on a weapons charge, Sarsfield said. She suffered injuries during the collision and was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

4:01 p.m. update: Police say the suspect has been caught and arrested. The school placed on lockdown also has been cleared, an officer said.

3:50 p.m. update: Witnesses say a white Honda Civic came speeding down North Livermore Avenue toward opposing traffic and collided into several cars.

The scene unfolded in front of Seema Bhatia, who was traveling northbound on North Livermore Avenue and was behind one of the cars that was hit head-on by the speeding Honda.

"The car flew in the air before it landed on its side," she said. "It was crazy."

Lavon Ramos also was driving on North Livermore Avenue toward Portola Avenue when she saw the collision.

Ramos said after the Honda landed on its side a man got out of the vehicle and ran into a parking lot that belongs to a nearby apartment complex. A woman inside the vehicle also tried to run from the scene, but was tackled by bystanders who turned her over to police, Ramos said.

Another rattled witness provides the following recap:

"That car was coming so fast against traffic . . . it was like a video game," said Sean Evans, who said he was nearly hit by the vehicle.

It appears the Charter High School on Portola Avenue was also placed on lockdown during the investigation. Police on scene said the man was found and arrested shortly after the collision.

--

Emergency crews are on scene investigating a collision involving multiple vehicles near the intersection of North Livermore and Junction avenues.

Initial reports say officers were pursuing a person riding in a stolen vehicle. After the collision the suspect ran from the scene.

Injuries are unknown at this time.

Livermore Patch is on scene and will update as more information is made available.

I agree with mike. Livermore really is going down hill.

Hope there are many thousands more in Livermore with this great attitude and unafraid to get involved. Maybe scum of the earth (citizens and bureaucrats) would have more respect for other peoples' rights and property.
Tina Sanders October 26, 2012 at 08:55 pm
Be a part of the solution not a part of the problem. Livermore is a good town with good people we can't control who runs through it to ruin it's reputation. These instances are far and few compared to surrounding cities and thank God our town is not a war zone like another Bay Area city. Focus on all that is good don't marinate in what is bad. Lead by example.

Junction K-8 Trunk or Treat and JH dance is still on! Thank you to the wonderful citizens of our great city of Livermore!

This same guy was speeding through the Home Depot/In n Out Burger parking lot right before the accident. He almost hit my car but I locked up my brakes. Scary.

The Oaklandization of Livermore continues, this time turning Livermore Avenue into MacArthur Boulevard. Coming soon--sideshows on Chestnut, Junction, Portola and Las Positas along Livermore Avenue followed by drag races north of 580.

Stay vigilant!! to protect our kids and our town!
mcobb5 October 26, 2012 at 09:56 pm
And the nonsensical, irrelevant contribution of Daniel Graham continues. What a sheltered life you live, my friend.

Livermore is FAR from ghetto. Apparently, you've never been to one.

And from what I have seen, especially with both post together, they are equally as inane.

Wow the people who tackled them just screwed themselves. I am going to laugh when the runners get their revenge. That will teach people not to get involved. They wouldn't get involved if this was anywhere past hayward i can guarantee that. Everyone always wants to feel special. They need the attention. Now i wish the girl had a gun on her. That would have been perfect. Those guys would never try to get involved in something like that again.
Local October 27, 2012 at 01:52 am
Wow. It's not about getting involved or feeling special, it's about protecting the innocent people from this trash.
Chuck Harding October 27, 2012 at 04:16 am
The thing is, is that this is an example of how stupid criminals are - they seem to think they can outrun the speed of radio waves. I for one am very glad that some ordinary people took it upon themselves to help LPD. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they were military or ex-military.
Owl October 27, 2012 at 10:15 am
Another job well done LPD. Keep up the good work.

Kohls? I guess Wal-Mart was closed

I read these comments every so often ..... Maybe every couple of weeks. And EVERY single time I do, Daniel Graham has something idiotic to contribute. There are actually jobs available out there. Find one!! Dear God, I hope you have no children. Why do you stay here? MOVE if its so horrible!! And if there's a "good" Daniel Graham out there that comments, my advice to you is to change your name. @soveriegn citizen, you too are a DB. You "hope" these criminals get revenge on good folks who were trying to apprehend a dangerous criminal as he's running through a school?!?!?!?? Are you for real? What a POS you are, my friend. I hope one day it's your car that's stolen or it's your kid's school that one of these creeps goes ruining through. Wow..... I'm blown away by your incensitive comments there. You and Daniel ought to get together over a cup of coffee and talk about how superior and wise you both are, compared to the rest of us degenerates.
My hat's off to those who took the guy down. He could have killed somebody on the street or in that school. I applaud you.
rastagirl October 27, 2012 at 12:15 pm
Well said sovereign. And i wouldnt be surprised if they were military or ex military either. They're the worst ones. According to the fbi, they are the new al quaeda. Thats all:)
James Buckley October 27, 2012 at 02:44 pm
So glad to have moved out of town in 2002 after 30 plus years in Livermore. We now live in the peace and quiet of Plumas county which has 2 signal lights in 500 square miles. The day we were loading the moving van on Del Norte in 2002 a young pizza delivery kid was robbed at gunpoint at noon with pizza boxes and pizza all over the street. Crime seems to increase every year in Livermore, and it is sad to see the once sleepy country town develope all the problems that western Alameda county has had for 30 plus years. Hope Bart coming to Livermore does not make crime problems climb to higher levels than they are currently.
Roger V. Tranfaglia October 27, 2012 at 03:24 pm
So let me get this straight. The people who got sideswipped and the people who got into the headon with the suspects are at fault!?!?!? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!! If I was there yes, would have gotten involved.
Rik Richardson October 27, 2012 at 03:33 pm
You are correct my friend!

People, Livermore is not ghetto. Go to Oakland or Antioch, that's where it's ghetto. Those people probably weren't from Livermore

I was right there to witness it in my car. Thanks to all our awesome citizens that helped get the man and woman that were morons

Wow, so quick to jump to conclusions and judge. Maybe T.G. BUYS the child's lunch. Every schoolRead More sells hot lunch every day. At the majority of our schools, more lunches are bought than given for free.
DeAnna Senft McDaid June 13, 2013 at 12:43 pm
The schools give us 2 options as parents. 1. Buying lunches on campus or 2. Send them with a lunch.Read More Clearly the author of this chose number 1 and the school was OUT leaving the child with NO 3rd option. Shame on that school.

A great issue! However, the rodeo is nothing but animal cruelty wrapped up as "tradition"Read More and "entertainment". Why would the animal's welfare become a concern now? Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens. "Bucking broncos" and steers are provoked with electric prods, sharp sticks, caustic ointments, and the pinching "bucking" strap, which is what really makes them jump, they are not "wild" and "dangerous" . The cowboys earn points by spurring the bucking horse. I have seen them up close and many are bleeding. Calves, roped when running, have their necks snapped back by the lasso, often resulting in neck and back injuries, bruises, broken bones, and internal bleeding. After their short and painful "careers," animals in rodeos are sent to the slaughterhouse. Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, describes the animals discarded from rodeos for slaughter as being "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached [to the flesh] was the head, neck, leg, and belly. I have seen animals with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs. I have seen as much as 2 to 3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin." Every national animal protection organization opposes rodeos because of their inherent cruelty. Don't feel bad everyone, I used to love the rodeo too. Before I knew better...
Bonbrwneyes June 10, 2013 at 09:13 pm
Something to consider and not pushing it aside because I feel its unimportant, but what I'd love toRead More have access to is how the riders that were hurt are doing today. Two bull riders got gored, one in the back and he was down and out for a bit and then obviously not "okay" as he stumbled out of the arena and then another that got his leg hurt and he couldn't get himself over the gate on his own. Left saturday's Rodeo hoping they were okay and would love follow up if at all possible. Thanks!

Thank you! That is what we want to know too. We have had more power outages this week than in theRead More 20+ years total that we have lived in this house!
Lynn June 8, 2013 at 07:03 pm
It would be nice to know, indeed. When my husband called to report the outage the recording saidRead More there were no outages in our area, which was clearly incorrect.
AT June 9, 2013 at 06:00 pm
I got the same thing, no outages when I called. I requested to be contacted by PG&E to explainRead More the problem. No call for that but I did get a "survey" call about their automated system. We have also lived here for 20+ years and never had this many outages.
