A collision on eastbound I-580, near Hopyard Road this morning shut down several lanes of the freeway around 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol website. CHP officials say an Acura and a box truck were involved in the collision.

California Highway Patrol Sergeant Joe Azevedo says the box truck ended up on its side and the driver of the Acura had to be cut out of the car by fire personnel.

"The driver of the Acura had major injuries and was taken to the hospital," Azevedo said. "We believe he will survive but he had some pretty significant injuries and so we are investigating further."

Azevedo added that although the driver and passenger in the box truck suffered minor injuries, they were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

According to the CHP website, the driver was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
