Defense Reviewing Offer in Case of Teacher Accused of Sex With Student

A Granada High teacher accused of having sex with a former student appeared in court Wednesday. She is scheduled to return to court on May 22.

An offer has been made to a teacher accused of having sex with a former student, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office announced in court Wednesday.

Marie Johnson, 41, faces charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 18, oral copulation and committing a lewd act on a child, according to court records.

Attorneys working the case on Wednesday requested the matter continue at a later date to allow the district attorney's office time to review additional information.

"The defense would like the people to consider a few items the people doesn't have," said Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Venus Johnson.

Marie Johnson met with her attorney, Berkeley-based Elizabeth Grossman, after Wednesday's hearing. She was dressed in a red inmate suit and began to cry during a conversation with her attorney.

Grossman declined to comment on the case and the offer from the district attorney.

Johnson is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of a $950,000 bail.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on May 22 in Department 703 of the Gale-Schenone Hall of Justice in Pleasanton.
