CHP reports a cow ran onto Interstate 580 near the North Livermore Avenue exit and caused traffic delays on Wednesday evening.

A cow that ran onto Interstate 580 caused police to temporarily shut down the freeway Wednesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol's Traffic Incident log.

  • At about 7:40 p.m. the CHP received reports that a cow was walking along the eastbound North Livermore Avenue off ramp.
  • Several drivers were slamming on their brakes to avoid hitting the cow, according to CHP reports.
  • At 7:45 p.m. a caller told CHP that the cow made its way onto the middle of the intersection and to the bottom of the off ramp, before heading back up the ramp and running back onto the freeway.
  • At 7:48 p.m. CHP requested a traffic break.
  • At 7:57 p.m. all eastbound lanes were stopped just east of First Street.
  • At 8:15 p.m. CHP sent out a notice to re-open the freeway.

It is unclear if the cow was corralled.
