Arrests, Citations At Police Checkpoint

Livermore officers make two drunken driving arrests and impound 11 vehicles during Friday night checkpoint.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and 11 vehicles were impounded during a police checkpoint Friday evening.

Livermore police officers inspected 1,200 vehicles during the checkpoint from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Portola Avenue.

Sgt. John Hurd said two people were arrested for drunken driving and another was booked on drug-related warrants.

Officers handed out 13 citations and impounded 11 vehicles because the motorists were driving with suspended or revoked licenses or no license.

Hurd said people driving without proper licenses is more prevalent than most citizens realize.

"It's very common, unfortunately," he said.

The checkpoint was part of a yearlong series of checkpoints funded by a federal grant.

The money pays for five checkpoints from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. Livermore police have conducted two and three more are scheduled this summer at undisclosed times and locations.
