$380,000 Grant Will Help Police Fight Alcohol Offenses Among Kids

The grant will be dispersed over three years and will be used for both enforcement efforts and to raise awareness, police say.

Information from the Livermore Police Department--
The Livermore Police Department is proud to announce that it is partnering with the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs and Prevention Advisory Council in an effort to increase alcohol safety and awareness among youth and young adults targeting 12 years to 25 years of age.

This federally funded grant of $380,000 will be distributed over a period of 3 years to assist the Livermore Police Department with enforcement and educational efforts to help combat the abuses of alcohol related offenses amongst the youth and young adults within our community.

The funds will be used through enforcement efforts such as minor decoy operations, downtown walking patrol operations, party patrols, DUI saturation patrols, and higher visibility at high school events. In addition to these enforcement efforts, the Livermore Police Department will purchase equipment to assist with alcohol detention and DUI offenses.

Realizing education is also a key factor when combating underage and excessive drinking, the Livermore Police Department has identified ways to communicate this to the target audience as well as their parents. Through the use of press releases, social media, message boards, presentations to students, and letters to retail establishments, the Livermore Police Department will publicize efforts and results by using these avenues as a means to educate the public.

Presentations by the School Resource Officers to the students will also stress alcohol awareness and its impact on decision making. The Livermore Police Department is committed to ensuring members of our community are safe from the tragedies afflicted by alcohol use and poor decision making. It is our intent to take a zero tolerance approach to underage and excessive drinking through a heavy enforcement approach and educational outreach.
