What Should Replace Paddy's Coffee House?

For an entire decade, Paddy's Coffee House brought coffee and culture to Union City's Old Alvarado district.

The coffee shop served as more than just a place to grab a cup of joe. Paddy's Coffee hosted countless music concerts, comedy nights, poetry readings, meetings, forums and other community events.

But the doors to Paddy's Coffee House closed for good in mid-December, leaving the building located on the corner of Smith and Watkins streets, leaving us wondering what will go in the old cafe in the future.

So, Tri-Cities, what business would you like to see replace the former Paddy's Coffee House? Share your thoughts in our comments section below.

Paddies wasn't just a coffee house - it was a community space, one of the few where folks could get together early in the morning or late into the evening, even if you didn't have the money to buy something. It wasn't just a space for expression, but a place where we could live life in the company of others. It cultivated community. I'm sure many of us have stories of how Paddies produced a community that was bigger than any one man or one coffee shop; the donation drives, the board games with strangers, late night learning sessions. Most businesses won't meet up to those high expectations. I don't care what in particular is in that space, but whatever it is, I'd hope that it continued to serve the needs of our community above everything else.

whatever it is, it should be a locally owned business. old alvarado is not going to increase or maintain its "little downtown" charm by having a chain or corporate business in it. we all have a responsibility to shop and support local. it's what makes communities thrive and beautiful.

Bruh, a Paddy's coffee memorial. NOTHING can replace it. In Ricky Bobby's words "if you don't chew Big Red well F/// you!"

Some place that doesn't hire staff that moonlight robbing jewelry stores?

Nadja, I take it you didn't patronize Paddy's. Paddy and Paddy's Coffee Shop did so much in and for the community and that incident is no reflection of the man or his establishment. Katrina's post was right on and I miss Paddy’s every day. It’s difficult to find a place in this day and age that treats you like family. You could go there and were warmly welcomed regardless if you had just been there the day before or a few months ago. Paddy knew his customers by name and in most cases what they wanted. (Paddy saved my husband on more than one occasion by reminding him what my preference was.) Whatever goes in that spot has some big shoes to fill.
