Hoop It Up

Passion is just one of the many things that basketball has taught me. To either do things with 110% effort or to not do them at all. With this in mind, it has also opened many doors for me. Doors that I would have never imagined stepping through without the confidence and self-respect that I've gained through 7 years of balling. Who would of ever thought that a shy gal like me would ever be able to teach First Aid/CPR/AED classes to people TWICE my age? Basketball will be in my blood forever, and I want to spread this passion that I've gained to others all over the world. One thing that I've learned through the years is that passion spreads like wildfire.
You see guys like Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, Rajon Rondo and all of the other NBA players pour their hearts and souls out onto the court each and every game day. Just the sight of this can inspire and motivate kids everywhere to pursue their dreams of either becoming a NBA/WBNA player or whatever their aspirations may be. I myself, hope to spread the passion that basketball brings inside of me to others as well. To motivate them to always work hard and never give up, no matter how foggy their future may be. I remember my freshman year of pre-season basketball and how easily I gave up on basically everything. My first mile with the AVHS Girls Basketball coach, I ran a 9:00 minute and was extremely proud of myself and thought that I could NEVER run any faster than what I did that day. However, my coach saw potential in me and that whole week motivated me to work harder and not give up just because my mind tells me to. The next week, I ran a 6:50 minute mile. It just goes to show that we all need a little push in the right direction sometimes. My coach did it for me, and that's what I plan to do for others. Through the money made from the basketball skills camps that I plan to host, it will fund the creation of basketball courts all over AND spread the love of the game to those who aren't as privileged enough to experience it as we are here in the Tri-Valley area.

My mission:
I've visited Vietnam once in 2010, and hundreds of thousands of miles north and south of the capital city of Saigon, there was not a single basketball court in sight. Of course, building a basketball court for others won't end all of the problems in the world, but it is a great first step. Because it has opened so many doors for me, I know that it can do the same for others. For those in underprivileged countries, maybe a hand in opening the door of opportunity is all they need to get motivated to do great things in the world, and together, we can be the ones that lend them that hand.
