Chill Out! Savings with the Live More, Save More program

For new readers...the Live More, Save More program is brought together by the City of Livermore, Chevron Energy Solutions, and WattzOn, designed to provide a free service for Livermore residents and small businesses to save them money, reduce energy use, and to raise awareness.

Here are a few tips on how to save energy (and money!) with your fridge and freezer, since the days are heating up.
1. Let hot items cool down before putting them into the fridge. When you put a hot item into the fridge, the fridge has to work harder to cool it down. To save energy, allow the hot item to cool to room temperature on the counter.
2. Cover containers!
3. Ensure your fridge and freezers are properly lined on the inside, so the cool air does not escape.
4. Make sure the doors aren't constantly being opened for long periods of time, and avoid opening them on hot days. Here's a scenario: you want to know what's in the kitchen to eat and you stare at the inside of the fridge. This wastes energy and lets the cool air not only escape, but gets warmer air inside the fridge/freezer, thus the units must work harder to cool it back down. Now imagine this times 5 people.
5. Fill 'er up! Make sure you get your money's worth and fill up your units. If you only have one or two items in the entire unit, it would be recommended to unplug the unit.

Of course, all these tips are only recommendations for people who would like to reduce their energy use and it is completely up to the people's discretion to use it as they would like.
